News from Cherie Spannenburg

Head of Music

Anzac services

The College held its annual Anzac Assembly last Thursday.  Elliot Kendall performed the Last Post and Rouse and did a stellar job, and  the Saints Big Band and Choir performed the Australian and New Zealand National Anthems.  On Anzac Day, the combined choirs of St Augustine’s and St Monica’s sang at the Dawn Service on the Esplanade  opposite the RSL.

Elliot Kendall performed the Last Post and Rouse again at the Stratford Dawn Service and the AFL premiership game on Friday.  Mr Chandler performed similarly at St Francis Xavier School and at the Trinity Beach Dawn service also.  It’s a busy time of year for our musicians.

Term 2 events

You will notice that this term is particularly busy with a lot of exciting performances and workshops. Please keep an eye out for all communication around these.  Much of this communication is time sensitive.  The outline of what is happening "around the grounds" is set out below.  Please make a note of it in your family diaries.

Parents in Touch

On Friday 20 June our parents have the special opportunity to attend a session with Dr Anita Collins. Anita has a unique skill in translating complex research findings into everyday language for the teacher, parent and student. Her influence was pivotal in the Music Education: A Sound Investmentreport, advocating for long-term improvement in Australian music education. She was directly responsible for a well-known TED Ed short film titledHow Playing an Instrument Benefits your Brain  and a TEDx talk What If Every Child Had Access to Music Education from Birth? as well as the TV documentary series called Don’t Stop the Music.  You can read more about her work here.

Dr Collins is a warm and vibrant speaker who is engaging and entertaining.  We are so very lucky to have this session with her.  Please come along and join us for an interesting evening between 5-6pm in Lennon Hall.

Friends of the Arts

For all our new families, we have a group called Friends of the Arts where parents and carers are contacted when we need help with the logistics or organisation of events.  For example, we might need a couple of parents at the door for a concert to collect gold coin donations or sell raffle tickets for fundraising.  If you are interested in being on that email list and have a little time to help us out occasionally, we’d love to hear from you.  Please email me at cspannenbu@cns.catholic.edu.au and let me know you’re keen to help.

2025

Our program is busy and vibrant with many opportunities for performances. We entertain on assemblies, perform in productions and music nights as well as provide liturgical music for the college. There are plenty of performance opportunities for our students.

Information for events and performances can be found on the Arts Department Facebook page. There will be information in the newsletter and parent slips sent out. Below is a calendar of events planned so far. This will be added to over the course of the year, so please re-read it each edition to check that you are abreast of all that his happening and make sure you put these dates in your diary.
