Around the Grounds

St Augustine's had a big finish to Term 1 in sport, with our Marist Basketball team travelling to Melbourne for the National Marist Basketball Carnival. The boys competed strongly throughout the tournament, finishing as Division 2 champions and placing 9th overall. More details about this tournament will be shared in the next edition of the newsletter.

Our Senior Hockey team also travelled to Melbourne to compete in the MGS Invitational Hockey Tournament, finishing as runners-up. Meanwhile, our CISSA teams are all sitting comfortably at the top end of their respective ladders. Additionally, our Intermediate Volleyball team placed runner-up in the Cairns All Schools Volleyball competition. These achievements, along with the success of our College Cross Country and Athletics Carnivals, have made for a massive month in Saints Sport!

Athletics Carnival

The annual St Augustine’s Athletics Carnival was held on Wednesday of Week 2 at Barlow Park. It was fantastic to see so many students actively participating, showing house spirit, and demonstrating excellent sportsmanship throughout the day. Congratulations to Reginald House on their dominant win, as well as the age champions listed below.

A special mention goes to our record breakers: Lewis Williams (4:37.00) and Ash Mayes (4:50.60) both broke the longstanding 13 Years 1500m record, previously held by former world number one triathlete Brad Bevan since 1981. Oliver Vikionkorpi (25.68m) and Liam Brand (23.30m) also surpassed the 12 Years Discus record set by current Year 11 student William Imhoff.

Congratulations to all students who placed in events or simply gave it their best – this spirit is what the day is all about. Finally, a sincere thank you to the staff who ensured the carnival ran smoothly from start to finish.

Cross Country Carnival

St Augustine’s students competed in the 2025 Cross Country Carnival on Wednesday of Week 10. House captains and their teams set the tone for the day with passionate war cries, building a spirited atmosphere. The boys pushed through the hot conditions and delivered exceptional performances across a series of highly competitive races. The final results were incredibly close, with just 27 points separating first and third place, and only 4 points between first and second. Congratulations to Reginald House on taking out our first carnival of the year.

MGS Invitational Hockey Tournament 2025

13-17 April - Coaches Mr Seivers and Mr Watson

The senior hockey side travelled to Melbourne for the third time in recent years to compete in the Melbourne Grammar School (MGS) Invitational tournament. Anthony Taifalos and Oliver Donnelly were appointed co-captains.

The lead up to the tournament didn’t go to plan. Two scheduled trial matches against Townsville Schools, St Ignatius Park and Kirwin SHS, didn’t eventuate as the roads were cut due to flooding. However, under the guidance of Mr Birt, the players selected through trials trained well and were prepared for the tournament.

Pool A matches

A hard fought 3-2 win against Scotch College in the opening game set us up nicely in the pool matches. The following three games against Mentone, MGS and Brighton all resulted in comfortable wins, and we were assured first place heading into the final game against St Peter’s, South Australia. Unfortunately, we dropped this game against a hungry South Australian side who were looking for a place in the semi-finals. Despite the loss, we finished first in our pool.

Semi-final v St Kevin's, won 4–1

The semi was a step up in pace and skill. St Kevin's were a classy side and pushed us hard. A very even first 30 minutes had the score at 1-1. The half time talk was to keep the tempo of the game fast, as we could sense them fatiguing. As the third quarter started, we seemed to gain momentum and three second half goals led to a 4-1 win.

Final v Hale (WA),  lost 0–3

The Perth side boasted seven WA state players and had cruised through previous matches. Our boys knew they were in for a tough match and the speed and skill in the game was great to watch. Brody copped a stick to the head and had to get to the blood bin – the reshuffle led to Hale’s second quarter goal. Our boys didn’t drop their heads and defended extremely well. Highlight of the first half was a scorching tomahawk from Lucas heading top right that was superbly saved by the Hale keeper.

We had plenty of opportunities in the third quarter, including seven penalty corners, but failed to capitalise. In the 65th minute, as we pushed players forward hoping to crack the Hale defence, they countered and scored. Hale knocked in a third in the final minute. The Saints boys can be proud of their efforts and satisfied they gave it their all.

CISSA sports

Round 4 saw our CISSA teams take on rivals, Cairns State High School. Due to wet weather at the end of Term 1, the round was split, with all outdoor fixtures rescheduled to Week 1 of Term 2. Cairns SHS claimed victories in both basketball and volleyball, but our outdoor teams – AFL, football and touch football – responded strongly with wins in their respective matches. Our squads will now look to build on their strong start to the season in Round 5 against St Mary’s Catholic College.
