Year 5

Anti-Bullying Week and Book Week

From the 17th to the 21st of August, the whole school participated in Anti-Bullying Week. We had so many cool events, including Monday and Friday being the most important. Monday was Crazy Sock Day, where we could wear funny-looking socks that represented us in different ways and showed that no one is the same. On Friday, we wore a pop of purple to represent no bullying and kindness.

The next week, on Friday, we got to show off our amazing costumes and wear no uniform for the rest of the day! Book Week is about dressing up as your favourite character from a book and getting creative. On the 28th of August, the whole school had a parade, and everyone had the best outfits. Two people from each class were selected to win a prize.

The two winners from each class got to take a photo with Miss Wells, a classroom teacher, and Mr Park, the library and science teacher. The winners also got to choose a book from a table, such as 100 Minutes of Danger, The Mandalorian, The Last Bear and so much more!

In the library, we read six books and voted for our favourite book. Every year level voted, including Foundation, Years 1 and 2, Years 3 and 4, and Years 5 and 6. There were four winning books altogether, with a favourite chosen by each group.

English 

This term, the Year 5s have been participating in Book Club. We were assigned a book and each week we read a selected number of chapters and completed a different role.

The Connector made connections between the book and their own experiences, other texts or the world. The Summariser summarised what had happened and made predictions about what might happen next. The Discussion Director created questions about the text for the group to discuss, while the Vocabulary Enricher identified challenging words and phrases, explored their meanings and completed a related vocabulary challenge. Every Friday, we come together in our Book Club groups to share our work and lead discussions about what we had read. We enjoy listening to different ideas, sharing our opinions and learning from one another.

In Literacy, we have been exploring the wonderful world of poetry! We have been reading and evaluating a variety of poems, discussing what we notice about the language, structure, topic and voice, and considering how poets play with language to engage their audience.

We have explored different types of poems, including acrostic poems, quatrains and free verse poetry. We have also learned how poets use poetic devices such as rhyme, similes, metaphors, onomatopoeia, alliteration and personification to make their writing more interesting and create vivid images for the reader.

An acrostic poem uses the letters of a word to begin each line of the poem. A quatrain is made up of four-line stanzas and often uses rhyme and rhythm. Free verse poetry does not follow a set rhyme scheme, rhythm or structure, which gives poets the freedom to experiment with words, line breaks and ideas.

We have also been developing our “show, don’t tell” writing by using sensory details, actions and descriptive language to help the reader create a picture in their mind. As part of our poetry learning, we have explored Red Room Poetry’s Poem Forest and used the natural world as inspiration for our own poems.

A trees Journey

Abigail Krins

My head poked through the soil

as I stared up at my brothers and sisters.

They are so big now. 

One day I will be like that.

All the younger ones still in the soil

will look up to me,

and think what I am thinking now.

I remember when they had to leave the soil.

I was sad to see them go,

but I knew we would be reunited someday.

And now it’s my turn.

It’s different here than in the soil.

I can see the sunlight peeking through

from behind my siblings' canopy of green.

There is no sunlight underground.

They are so far away.

I am just an ant to them,

and they are giants awaiting me.

Seasons pass.

I am getting closer

to where I need to be each day.

I can see my younger siblings beneath me,

wondering when it would be their turn.

After many harsh Winters,

burning summers,

cool Falls,

and colourful 

Spring sat last I joined my family at the canopy.

They welcomed me with open branches,

and my own finally joined them.

Our canopy now grows each year,

and every time someone joins,

it’s someone finding their home

just like me all those years ago.

Our family is complete at last.

Maths

This term in Maths, we have learnt several different multiplication strategies to help us solve a variety of problems. We used these strategies in some fun activities, such as our pizza task, where we had to work out the cost of each slice, and our Melbourne Cricket Ground activity, where we calculated how much money the MCG could make from ticket sales on game day. Some of the multiplication strategies we have learnt include the extended form algorithm, short form algorithm and area model.

Earlier in the term, we also learnt about 3D shapes and used our knowledge to design and create toys made from different 3D shapes. Currently, we are learning about area, including how to calculate the area of rectangles and irregular shapes and how to choose the correct units of measurement.

On Tuesday, 25 August, the Year 5 and 6 students came together in the hall for a fun and interactive Maths incursion. We learnt about Maths and some famous mathematicians from around the world.

 We have really enjoyed challenging ourselves and learning lots of new Maths skills this term!

Inquiry 

This term, we have been learning about space and the Solar System. We are also learning how to do script writing and collaborate with each other.

So far, we have been writing their scripts and turning them into videos. One example is a news report interview by Alessandra, Sinead and Sebastian in 5B. Sebastian is a news reporter, and Alessandra and Sinead are astronauts trying to stop the planets from talking! There are other ideas too, like Space Jeopardy and many more.

Recently, we have been learning about camera angles and how to film videos. We have learnt how gravity keeps our planets in orbit, how gravity helps sustain the universe, and that Earth revolves around the Sun in an elliptical shape.

We also know that an ellipse is like a squished circle and that ellipses come in different shapes and sizes, which means our planets have different-sized orbits.
