Term 4, Week 2
Welcome back for Term 4! We are impressed at how well our students have settled back in for our final term and have transitioned smoothly back into our routines. While Term 4 can be a busy time as we begin to look ahead to 2027, it is also a wonderful opportunity to pause and reflect on the year as a whole. It is incredible to see just how much your children have grown, learned and developed throughout the year. We are so proud of each and every one of them and look forward to making the most of our final term together!
Inquiry
Our Inquiry Unit this term is based around the question ‘How has different transport and technology changed over time?’ Core learning will be based on the History curriculum as we look at how and why things change including land and air transport, technology within our classrooms and even our own Blackburn Primary School over the last 130 years. We can’t wait for our end of unit excursion to Puffing Billy in November. Please check Compass for more details soon.
Reading, Writing and Spelling
In Reading we will be focusing on deep understanding of fiction texts through predicting, making connections, inferring and summarising. This is a great opportunity for us to bring the skills we have been practising all year into more thoughtful responses.
In Writing we will be revisiting persuasive pieces focusing on strong arguments and evidence to support our points of view. We will also continue to use rich vocabulary and correct sentence structure to create interesting narrative (story) writing. This term will be busy as we are finalising our Writer’s Gifts for the end of the year. We can’t wait to share with you what we have written!
In Spelling, Heggerty continues in Grade 1 as well as daily Phonics sessions for Grades 1 and 2. This term we will continue to explore visual and meaning patterns.
Maths
We have started the term revisiting skip counting patterns and place value for our Grade 1 students, and beginning to understand fractions. This draws upon our knowledge of multiplication and division to share equal parts. We encourage you to use fractions around the home in cooking, discussing time and lengths using half and quarter.
We will also use this term to revise some important concepts to ensure we are creating a strong base of knowledge for the years ahead. These include place value, time, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, time and statistics. We will also dive more into worded problems and open-ended tasks to put our knowledge into practice.
Classes will continue their weekly fluency practice, focusing on 1 skill per fortnight to improve in accuracy and speed. As always, please ask your child to share their maths fluency goal with you and wonder at just how quick they can be!
