Term 4, Week 2
I hope that everyone had a restful and enjoyable holiday and enjoyed the warmer Spring weather and all the beautiful colours that we see in nature during the Spring months.
My family enjoyed trips to various beautiful gardens and Galleries in both Melbourne and Central Victoria. Victoria has many wonderful exhibitions at our Regional Galleries as well as at NGV Australia and NGV International. All three Regional Cities: Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong have fabulous old Galleries with great collections of both Australian and International Artwork
Many of the children have also told me how much they enjoyed drives to see the Tessellar Tulip farm with its beautiful array of coloured tulips stretching over the Silvan hillsides, along with outings to the Dandenong Ranges Botanical Gardens and daffodil farms.
Nature and plants have always inspired artists to create and paint. In the Art room we have enjoyed looking at beautiful Spring landscapes and still life artworks. Our earlier focus on the Artwork of the Impressionist artists, especially Claude Monet, has inspired students to focus on ‘impressions of light’ in painting of water, clouds, landscape, gardens, and buildings.
This Spring we are having a learning focus on the diverse and colourful artwork of the inspiring Australian Artist Margaret Preston. Focusing on the works of art currently on show at the NGV Australian Gallery, located at Fed Square, students will explore the way that Margaret Preston, drew, painted and made prints of the Australian landscape, buildings and bridges, flora and fauna and still life compositions. She completed uniquely Australian artwork in drawings and paintings, print making, and ceramics. M.P. was a writer and traveller and an inspiration to generations of creative young Australians.
Many students have been busy doing their own artwork during the break and have brought in their work to share. It is wonderful to see how much pleasure young BPS artists get out of doing their own Artwork at home and bringing these works in to share with their friends and me. Terrific to know that children are enjoying Art in their spare time and embracing innovative ideas and Art in the world around us.
Term four is a long and busy term and a lot of creative activities are planned for our various levels.
Students of all levels are regularly introduced to the works of a range of Artists that are part of our Art History. Learning about the styles and skills of well known, notable and contemporary artists develops a broader knowledge and understanding of creativity that enhances children’s Art knowledge and skills.
Here are a few of the Units that we are doing this term:
*Animals in Art and Imaginary creatures
Since Caveman time to present day…. Artists have drawn, painted, collaged, and sculpted likeness and three-dimensional forms of their favourite animals. Students will be looking at a range of works from famous artists of their pets and imaginary creatures and will be creating and making their own 3D Artworks using a range of two- and three-dimensional modelling, construction and painting materials.
*Puppets, Mask making, and Big Personalities! - Collage, construction, drawing, and painting – Starting with ‘Where the Wild Things are’ by Maurice Sendak.
*Year Three and Four - Exploring the symbols, storytelling, colours, patterns, and narratives of First Australian Artworks. Seeing connections and the inspiration of first Australian Art, along with design links with Margaret Preston’s artwork.
*Grade One and Two - Focus on the art elements of line, shape and colour and the playful semi abstract work of Miro and Klee. Colourful adventures, negative and positive shapes and forms, fluidity of line and colour highlights for emphasis. Imaginary worlds in semi abstract, semi realism and beyond in our imaginations. Students will learn, that line, colour, shapes and forms can tell a story or create an emotion without having a need for realism.
*Abstraction and Art - How shapes and repetition of shapes, along with symmetry, asymmetry, split diagonals, and colour contrasts are used to create a design that is balanced and interesting. How can these ideas be used to create Artworks with a focus on the work of a range of Australian early 20th Century Artists and Abstract artists: Roy de Maistre, Grace Cowley and Ralph Bolsen
*Collage creations – how we can use paints, pastels, chalk, papers and card to create artworks using a wide range of skills: Spring landscapes and still lives in the style of the Impressionists both Australian and European. Our major focus will be on the Artwork of Margaret Preston.
*Portraiture - Expression, gesture, mood, and emotions created through line, proportion, colour, form, and emphasis. Photomontage, I pad art, drawing and crayon work. Focus on the work of the expressionist Fauvre artists.
*Threads and Textiles: Weaving, paper and fabric, collage, colours, textures, and fabric designs
*Modelling and 3D construction, making and joining skills, papier mâché, air dry clay, painting, and varnishing - imaginary creatures, favourite small animals, individual creations
*Grade Six special end of year activities
*End of year Christmas activities
A busy, creative, and exciting term is ahead of us in the BPS Old School Art Studio.
