Term 4, Week 2
Welcome back to Term 4! We hope you had a fantastic break- from all the stories we have heard, they sounded amazing!
This Term, our Foundies have some amazing experiences in front of them!
This Thursday the 15th of October we will be going to the Zoo with our buddies. Both the Foundations and Grade 6’s have loved having buddies this year, getting to spend time with them and have a familiar face around the school. We’re looking forward to our excursion.
We continue with our Heggerty’s program each day to develop phonological and phonemic awareness. We cover the consonants, short vowels, digraphs, blends and rhyme patterns in language play activities. The short lessons are fast paced and repetitive and are usually completed first thing in the morning or just prior to our Literacy sessions.
In Reader’s Workshop our focus mentor texts link strongly to our inquiry unit focusing on community. We are looking at both fiction and non-fiction. We will be looking at text features, and continuing comprehension through a variety of strategies such as questioning, retelling and students will continue to track their thinking in reading with sticky notes.
In Writer’s Workshop, we explore writing for different purposes as well as looking at sentence structure.. This term students will continue to edit their writing, practicing to self-correct, noticing punctuation, correct spelling of high frequency words, and adding or deleting words in their writing. Students will also continue to publish their work for their Writer’s Gift, which will come home at the end of the year. Teachers continue to work with students to develop each student’s goals. In Spelling sessions, we will be investigating consonant and vowel relationships and digraphs such as: ph, wh and ng.
In maths we have started the term by diving into equal sharing and grouping. It’s been wonderful to see students enjoying hands-on learning tasks and watch their problem solving skills grow. This term we will also be looking at data and statistics as well as location, mapping and numbers.
This term our focus is Geography with a specific focus on community. Students will learn that our community is made up of places and people. Different places have different features and purposes, and people work together to make our community a safe, happy and useful place. We have a series of incursions booked with the firefighters always being a foundation highlight.
This term students will also participate in a series of step up sessions in preparation for moving into Grade 1. More information will come out about this closer to the dates. We look forward to another fantastic term as we come closer to the end of the year.
Thank you,
Alannah, Vicky, Simone and Wendy
