Room 2

Foundation - Year 2

Excited to be back!

We are really excited about our learning this term in Room 2. We have been using new ARC resources to support our teaching and learning, and it has been a fantastic addition to our classroom.

Our mornings have been especially busy with our new phonics slides, helping us move through our learning with focus and energy. It has been wonderful to see how much students are engaging with their phonics and the progress they are making.

Text Studies: Edward the Emu

Room 2 students have had a fantastic start to Text Studies, using Edward the Emu as our mentor text. Throughout this unit, students have been building their understanding of characters, feelings, and the deeper meaning within a story.

Students began by exploring verbs and character actions, identifying what Edward does throughout the story and how his actions connect to his feelings. From here, they moved into recognising emotions and themes, discussing how Edward’s changing feelings help us understand the message of the story.

As their learning developed, students looked closely at how Edward changes over time, tracking his emotional journey and summarising how his character grows. They then explored personality traits, using their understanding to imagine what might happen next and creatively continue the story.

To bring all of their learning together, students used story maps to retell and sequence the key events, helping them clearly understand the structure and message of the text.

Literacy Skills - Grouping nouns, common and proper nouns

We have been building our understanding of nouns and verbs and how they work in sentences.

Students have been learning to identify nouns (people, animals, places, things) and verbs (action words), and explain the difference between them. They have also started exploring different types of verbs, including doing, saying, thinking, and feeling words.

As part of this learning, students have been introduced to common and proper nouns, learning how to recognise them and correctly use capital letters for names of people, places, and special things.

Mathematics - Creating and Continuing Patterns Sequence

We have started the term by exploring patterns and number sequences through hands on learning.

Students have been creating and continuing patterns using shapes, symbols, and numbers, learning to recognise and explain repeating patterns. They have also been identifying missing parts in patterns and building confidence in extending them.

As part of this learning, students have been developing their understanding of skip counting, particularly by 10s and 5s, using number lines, charts, and concrete materials to support their thinking.

It has been so lovely to see students recognising patterns in numbers and building strong foundations for future mathematics learning.
