Room 1 Years 3 -6

Welcome back for Term 2 

Term 2 has begun with a strong and positive start across the school. We have introduced new literacy groups as part of our commitment to achieving the goals outlined in our Annual Implementation Plan (AIP), allowing us to better target student learning and support individual needs. It has been wonderful to see how well students are adapting to this new structure, demonstrating confidence and flexibility as they transition between group sessions and their regular classroom activities. This smooth adjustment is a testament to both their resilience and the supportive learning environment fostered by our staff.

 

This change reflects our shift towards a multi-tiered system of support which is considered best practice for teaching and learning.

Alongside this, our staff have also been actively engaging in new learning opportunities. Brady’s LEGO Club has provided a creative and collaborative space. This activity involves small group work (2–3 participants), typically with defined roles such as builder, engineer (instruction giver), and block picker. The focus is on developing communication skills and teamwork through structured collaboration, supported by role-specific scripts.

 

The environment is carefully organised with clear rules, visual supports (like lanyards), and a level/point system that rewards positive communication behaviours (e.g. using manners, making eye contact).

Miss. Marg has been sharing valuable insights during staff meetings around Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) and Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA). This professional learning is helping us deepen our understanding of how each student’s brain is unique, ensuring we continue to build inclusive and responsive classroom environments.

 

Our use of ARC resources continues to support literacy learning across the school using research-based texts. In our Blueback unit, students are learning about narrative voice and how authors share different points of view. They are also exploring the author’s message through characters and using this understanding to write their own persuasive texts with more descriptive and complex language. In The Mess That We Made, students are learning about ocean pollution and using this knowledge to write structured pieces, including an introduction, body paragraphs and a conclusion with a clear call to action.

Lion’s Public Speaking Competition

We are looking forward to the Lion’s Public Speaking Competition, which will be held in June (date to be confirmed). Students really enjoyed this experience last year, and it was fantastic to see their confidence grow so much. I am excited to see how our 2026 competitors will rise to the occasion. This year’s topics are engaging and encourage creativity and research.

 

The Topics for 2026 are:

Years 3 – 4 If you could go on a holiday any where in Australia, where would you go and why? Tells us about it and what would you see and do there.

 

Years 5 – 6 If you could have dinner with anyone in the world (a real person past or present), who would it be, and why, and what would you serve them for dinner?

It was a special experience to take part in the ANZAC Day march for the first time, continuing a valued school tradition. We were especially proud to see Hunter and Emma represent Cowwarr so respectfully within the community. It was wonderful to see our young people honour the soldiers, taking time out of their weekend to show such respect and understanding of the importance of this day.

 

In class, students watched a powerful video that followed the stories of two soldiers who shared very similar goals, yet experienced very different journeys. The video highlighted a time in history when Indigenous men were not allowed to serve in the military because of the colour of their skin. This provided an important opportunity for students to reflect on fairness, inclusion and how attitudes have changed over time, deepening their understanding of ANZAC Day and its significance

 

Grip Leadership Conference

The annual GRIP Leadership Conference is being held in Sale on the 11th of May. This conference has been equally valued by our school leaders and staff in previous years as being an experience that helps students prepare for any leadership role beyond school. The programme is underpinned by the core values of generousity, responsibility, integrity and people. 

 

This conference is only offered to Grade 6 students, once a year. 

 

All costs of transport and registration fees are covered by the school. 

 

Please confirm your Grade 6 childs' attendance ASAP.
