Year 4 Maths

Written by Hayley S.

Over the past weeks we have been doing addition. Addition is where you add two or more numbers together and you add it together. We have also been doing measurements on shapes like rectangle, hexagon and other shapes and we add all the numbers together that are around the shapes. This is called ‘the perimeter’.

We have to do measurements on other stuff as well instead of just doing shapes so we use the big ruler or we use our own ruler.

We also do mental math, then skip counting. Mental math is where there is this math sheet and you get two minutes and then someone from the class corrects it then we are done and we check our answers. This week we have also been practicing to skip count by eights.

For measurement, we also made chocolate chip cookies in class by using cups, tea spoons and jugs.

Over the past few weeks we have been working on Persuasive texts.

A persuasive text is a piece of writing that convinces someone of something. For example, Coca Cola is better than Sprite because Sprite is just fizzy water and Coke is Coke. That is an example of the start of a persuasive text.

This week we finished our class book, Kensuke’s Kingdom. It is about a boy who got stuck on an island after falling off his parents’ yacht.

We have also been doing ‘sentence a day’. A sentence a day is something we do every morning. It’s basically just a compound or complex sentence based on the new writing rule we are learning. For example “I extended the Lego bridge because it was way too small” or “The kid had a tendency to play with a fidget spinner.”
