Grade 5/6

Numeracy

Big Idea Statement:

Comparison: Numbers, expressions and measures can be compared by their relative values.

The Grade 5/6 students are continuing on with Big Idea 4, which shows them focusing on fractions, decimals and percentages and being able to connect all three.

We were able to display fractions on different graphs and place them on a number line from smallest to largest.

Students demonstrated a great knowledge of equivalent fractions and have been able to simplify large fractions as well.

The Grade 5/6 students have also learnt all about measurement, and can confidently explain the connection between different metric units as well as being able to convert them when needed.

In fluency, students completed a pre test on their 9 times tables and then learnt the strategy of ‘one less than factor then find the 9 total’ example; 2 x 9 = (one less than 2) = 1 + ? = 9 is 8 so 2 x 9 = 18 for the week. Monday morning we complete a post test on this and we were so proud of the amazing growth we saw.

We will now spend the week learning our 11 times tables, using the strategy doubling the first digit of the number you are multiplying.

Literacy

In Literacy, we are coming to the end of our Narrative topic, which focused on fables and morals, using our mentor text ‘The Silver Donkey.’ The students have been very involved with this story and it has shown some great conversation starters. We have started to plan our own fable, where we have chosen animals for our characters, a moral for our story and the action and problem that will be happening within it.

We are aiming to have our draft completed by the end of this week, so we can publish them and make our own class book that we can refer to throughout the year!

Integrated Studies

In Integrated Studies, we have been learning all about the different levels of government and what each level is responsible for, we spoke about how to become an Australian Citizen and the students participated in a Citizenship test, luckily, we all passed! We were all very surprised to see that we didn’t get any questions wrong. We encourage you to test your child at home about becoming an Australia Citizen to see what they remember from the test!

Although we are very excited about our camp next term, we understand how nervous and anxious it can make some of us feel. Please continue to have conversations at home about the amazing experience your child will have in Canberra.

A note on Xuno with information is available, please ensure the notes are completed and the deposit has been paid as soon as possible.

Please reach out to us if you have any concerns, questions or wonderings or if there is anything we can do to make this a little easier for your child.

Have a great week!

Miss Stephan and Mr Ward

Mr Tyson, congratulations on completing your university degree, the students hope you can come back one day and teach them again.
