Talking with Your Child About Social Media Age Restrictions

From 10 December 2025, new Australian laws will require many social media platforms to restrict access for users under the age of 16. These changes aim to support young people’s wellbeing by reducing exposure to harmful content and encouraging healthier online habits.

Families play an important role in helping children understand the reasons behind these changes and navigate what they mean in practice. Open conversations about online safety, responsible use, and finding positive alternatives can help young people adjust confidently and stay connected in safe, meaningful ways.

The eSafety Commissioner has developed clear information and guidance for parents and carers about the purpose of these restrictions, how they will be implemented, and practical ways to support children through the transition.
