Beauy Voice

This week marks the conclusion of the “Beauy Voice” program. This initiative was started last year to develop a deeper understanding of the data that students provide to the school in the yearly Attitudes to School Survey.
Every GOAL group is provided with the data relevant to their year level. Students feed back to their GOAL mentor areas of what the college is doing well, areas to improve and a variety of suggestions. Everything is compiled into a report and discussed with student volunteers, who come to a year-level roundtable discussion, to provide more targeted insights.
This year, students have examined data related to “Effective Teaching Practice for Cognitive Engagement”, “School Safety”, “Sense of Connectedness” and “Teacher-Student Relations”. Currently, the draft version of the report is sitting close to 30 pages! It is fantastic to have such an engaged and passionate student body that wants to actively acknowledge the positive work the college is doing, and contribute to ensuring that we remain a positive community where to learn is to grow.
One of the next steps of the process is to work with a year level to target an issue of their choice. Students from this year level will create a professional development session for teachers, which will provide a student perspective and methods of collaborating to address their concerns. Last year, students presented a session on feedback and providing more opportunities for students to understand their progress in the classroom. This session helped shape one of our strategic goals – evidence of the powerful impact that voices can have in enacting change.
I look forward to sharing the report with the staff and working with student leaders next year in continuing to ensure that Beaumaris Secondary College is a place for everyone.
