Year 3/4

English – The Arrival
In English, we have begun reading The Arrival by Shaun Tan. This powerful wordless graphic novel explores the experiences, challenges and emotions of immigration through the story of a man who leaves his home and family to build a new life in an unfamiliar country.
As we read and analyse the text, students are developing their skills in interpreting visual information, making inferences and discussing how characters feel and respond to new situations. The novel encourages students to think about themes such as belonging, resilience, courage, family and cultural diversity, while considering the experiences of people who move to a new country.
At home, ask your child to explain what has happened in the story so far and how the illustrations help communicate meaning without the use of words. These conversations will help strengthen their comprehension and critical thinking skills.
