L4 Homework Week 3&4

We hope all families had a wonderful break and are ready for the second half of the year! We know the students are excited to be back.

Literacy: 

This term we are reading Storm Boy. Please don't watch the movie with your child as we will be doing that at school and comparing the book and movie. We have spent the first 2 weeks identifying who the characters are, where the book is set, in which era it is set and learning new vocabulary. Some new words we have learnt are 'humpy', 'a junk', 'kerosene', 'forlorn', 'blunderbuss' and places in South Australia like Coorong, Goolwa, Mouth of the Murray, Cape Jervis, Kangaroo Island.

We are encouraging students to create questions about what they are reading and even in their own sustained reading books, ask questions about the characters, the setting, why something happened, how did the characters feel. Asking questions can happen before reading (predicting, wondering), during reading (clarifing, inferring, visualising) and after reading (word meaning, understanding what happened)

In Core Literacy, we have learnt about the root word tain, tent, tin, tinu meaning to hold.

4C have been containing our excitment while going to swimming. We have tried to contain ourselves to our single line when walking to the bus. We have also tried to practise sustained reading.

Numeracy:

In Maths we have continued to build our number fluency by practising our skills daily. We have also been reviewing renaming numbers. Renaming numbers (see below picture) supports addition and subtraction and rounding. It is an important place value skill.

We have also been practising times tables. By the end of this year students need to know and be fluent in the 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 times tables.
