Dear Families,

What a fantastic way to finish the term! Year 5 students enjoyed dressing in their sports clothes, with many proudly wearing attire representing their own sporting teams.

With camp coming up in Week 2 of Term 4, we encourage families to use the school holidays to organise and purchase any items your child may need for camp. Please check the camp information and packing list to ensure everything is ready for this exciting experience.

We wish all our Year 5 families a safe and restful holiday break and look forward to welcoming everyone back for an exciting Term 4!

Learning in Year 5 for Term 3:

Religious Education:

In Term 4, Year 5 students will begin their new Religious Education inquiry, “A Call to Action.” Through this inquiry, students will explore how Jesus’ mission continues through the actions of Christians today and how we are each called to live out our faith through service, justice, compassion and care for others. They will also consider how Jesus entrusted his disciples with continuing this mission and reflect on what it means for us to be called to action in our own lives. Students will begin making connections between Scripture and the ways they can show kindness, include others, stand up for what is right and use their gifts to make a positive difference in their school and wider community.

English:

For English in term 4, students will begin reading the novel The Last Bear by Hannah Gold. Through this engaging story, students will explore important environmental themes, including climate change, melting sea ice and the threats facing polar bears. In Writing, students will focus on persuasive writing by creating a persuasive letter to the Director of the Arctic Council. They will use persuasive language, evidence and effective arguments to advocate for action to protect the Arctic fox population, which is under threat from climate change, habitat loss and human activities.

Mathematics:

In Term 4, students will develop their understanding of fractions, decimals and percentages. They will explore the connections between these concepts, learn to represent and compare them in different ways, and apply their understanding to solve a range of mathematical problems.

Integrated Curriculum:

In Integrated Studies next term, students will explore how the elements of music, including rhythm, pitch, dynamics and tempo, can be used to communicate ideas and emotions. They will listen to and respond to music from a range of cultures, times and places, and explore the role of music in expressing and sustaining culture

Social & Emotional Learning:

In Term 4, students will revisit The St Thomas Way, school-wide expectations and being an upstander. They will also explore Day for Daniel, safety networks, trusted adults, body positivity and positive gender relations, with a focus on making safe and respectful choices.

Important Classroom Reminders:

• Fidget Toys

  We kindly ask that students do not bring fidget toys to school unless their use is a planned adjustment in consultation with Allied Health Professionals. Students who bring fidget toys without an approved adjustment will be asked to place them in their school bag for the remainder of the day to take home. We appreciate your support in encouraging your child to leave fidget toys at home.

   

• Please ensure that you are labelling all your child's belongings.

   

• Year 7 Enrolment St Peter’s College 2028

  St Peter's College has advised that enrolments for 2028 are almost ful, with only limited places remaining. If you have not yet submitted your child's enrolment application for St Peter's College for 2028, we encourage you to do so as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. Please note that enrolment at St Thomas the Apostle does not guarantee a place at St Peter's College.

• Year 5 Camp to Mill Valley Ranch will be on Monday12th-13th October. Wednesday 14th October is a student free day for year 5 students. Year 5 teachers will not be at school on this day. 

   

  Camp Reminders

  Medications: If your child requires medication while attending camp, please ensure the medication form is completed. All medication must be provided in a clearly labelled zip-lock bag with your child’s name on it. Thank you for helping us ensure medications can be managed safely while at camp.
