Dear Grade 3 Families,

Wow it's th eend of term 3 already!

Students explored and developed their understanding across a range of learning areas. In Religious Education, students explored the importance of remembering Jesus’ love at Mass, identified the main parts of the Mass and reflected on the Last Supper through Luke 22:19–20. In English, students developed their vocabulary, sentence structure, punctuation and writing skills, explored Greek number prefixes and literary devices, and summarised key events from Charlotte’s Web. In Mathematics, students identified, described, built and compared three-dimensional objects and revised their understanding of time. In Integrated Studies, students completed their puppets and explored how movement, expression and characterisation could create tension and drama. In Auslan, students developed their ability to describe and sign characters and practised new signs in different contexts. In Social and Emotional Learning, students explored consent, focusing on permission, choice and respect in everyday interactions.

Students loved creating their own Tower Museums in Mathematics this week! They enjoyed designing, building and comparing their towers while exploring 3D shapes and their features.

We will be heading to the Melbourne Zoo on Friday the 30th of October! 

Enjoy a fun-filled and relaxing holiday break! Take some time to rest, recharge and enjoy plenty of adventures, laughter and time with family and friends.                        Learning for Term 4, Week 1

Religious Education:

In Religion, students will explore Mission Month and how they can live like Jesus after celebrating Him at Mass. They will reflect on what is celebrated at Mass and how Jesus calls us to love others, seek justice and promote peace. Students will identify ways they can follow Jesus’ example in their everyday lives and create a personal plan to put His teachings into action.

English:

In English, students will explore The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate, developing their understanding of the characters, themes and key events throughout the novel. They will explore Ivan’s experiences and perspectives, making connections between the text and important ideas such as friendship, freedom, empathy and responsibility. Students will also develop their persuasive writing skills by learning how to structure a persuasive text with a clear introduction, stated opinion, supporting arguments and evidence, and a strong conclusion. They will practise using persuasive language, linking ideas, examples and reasons to effectively communicate their point of view and influence their audience.

Mathematics:

In Mathematics, students will begin the term with a number topic, where they will learn to represent multiplication and division in different ways. They will explore equal groups, arrays, sharing and grouping to develop their understanding of these operations and make connections between multiplication and division.

Integrated Curriculum:

In Integrated Studies, students will explore the purposes and meaning of drama within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. They will develop their understanding of how cultural knowledge can be respectfully represented through drama and incorporate this understanding into their puppet performances.

Auslan:

In Auslan, students will learn to sign an object (noun) first, followed by the colour (adjective) used to describe it. They will practise correctly ordering signs to describe a range of objects and colours and complete a “What Colour Do You Like?” activity to apply their understanding and develop confidence in using Auslan.

Social & Emotional Learning:

In Social and Emotional Learning, students will learn about the St Thomas Way and explore how Safety, Respect and Learning guide our behaviour at school. Students will identify 4–5 school routines and expectations that help create a safe, respectful and positive learning environment at St Thomas.

What you can do at home:

• 💛 Explore faith: Talk about Mission Month and discuss ways we can live like Jesus through kindness, service and helping others. Explore how different religions celebrate important events and express their faith.
• 📖 Read and persuade: Read for 15–20 minutes each evening and discuss new vocabulary and ideas. Practise persuasive writing using a clear opinion, arguments, evidence and conclusion.
• ✖️ Practise multiplication and division
• 🎭 Create, sign and connect: Explore how drama can respectfully represent Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and remember the St Thomas Way: Safety, Respect and Learning.

Important Classroom Reminders:

• Fidget Toys

  We kindly ask that students do not bring fidget toys to school unless their use is a planned adjustment in consultation with Allied Health Professionals. Students who bring fidget toys without an approved adjustment will be asked to place them in their school bag for the remainder of the day to take home. We appreciate your support in encouraging your child to leave fidget toys at home.

   

• Spare clothes/change of clothes

  Please pack spare clothes with a pair of socks and underwear to be placed in the front zip pocket of your child's school bag if they get muddy during recess and play time. 

• Please ensure that you are labelling all your child's belongings.
