End the School Year For the Environmental Council
As the final term draws to an end the Environmental Council has inducted our new executive team and it is our pleasure to introduce ourselves.
Matt - President
Nicole - Vice President
Anita - Secretary
James - Treasurer
Sonia - Communications Officer
Recently the Environmental Council has been busy repairing the recycling bins, ripping books, building bird feeders and separating seeds. However, we are unfortunately low on volunteers and would like to ask for your help! Anybody who would like to contribute one Thursday Break 2 each week to help in an air-conditioned room is more than welcome to come along.
One of the original projects of the Environmental Council was to establish a native shrub line along the boundary of the school property. This shrub line would ultimately join with the creek running behind the school. The shrubs had been planted three years ago and are producing seeds as well as becoming a home for insects not sighted before at the school. While one of the Environmental Council field volunteers was collecting seeds from an Australian Hop bush, he received the biggest surprise when a large Praying Mantis walked on his arm. This shows the increasing diversity that these shrubs are providing.
The Environmental Council would like to thank everybody who is contributing to filling our 10-cent recycling bins as they have been very successful lately. It's great to see that we are reducing littering and donating these bottles to a generous cause in our school community. Since the project has started, 8420 containers have been collected, which has raised $842 towards community projects run by St Vincent De Paul.
For the next year, the Environmental Council plans to host a mentor group based competition focusing on native plant growth and an event appreciating flora for next year’s Valentine’s Day.
We are very excited for the future and cannot wait to bring new projects, ideas and regeneration to our school environment, aiming to involve everybody in our school community.
