McCarthy Chess Club ends the year on a high
At the end of week 7, the McCarthy Chess Club played in its final competition of the year. Each year, the school hosts the Sarah Sommerlad Shield. The Sarah Sommerlad Shield is open to all the schools which had played against our yeamduring the year. This has always been the final chess event and the games are played in honour of a teacher who once ran the chess club but has since passed away due to cancer.
This was the biggest year for the competition to date, with 48 players from McCarthy, Farrer, Oxley, Calrossy and St Mary’s taking part.
For the fourth consecutive year, McCarthy has managed to retain the shield, with Chaise Gwatkin winning the competition for McCarthy. A special mention to Khang (Charlie) Nguyen and Jackson Medlock who also were part of the top 5 players of the competition.
I would like to thank Mr Edd Heap, who both trains and helps run the chess club at St Mary’s, for running the competition on the day.
It was extremely pleasing to see so many players taking part in the Sarah Sommerlad Shield, with a large number of high quality games on display. It was good to see students not caught up on their phones but engaging face to face with other people.
Well done to the entire chess team, both representative and social players. I look forward to restarting the chess club next year.
Chess Fun Fact:
