Welcome and Merry Christmas from the McCarthy Library Staff

This term has been a dynamic time in the Library as we have moved from one location to the next.  We are now settled into K6 and are continuing to provide our students with resources and an enjoyable environment to stay cool while in this friendly, welcoming and comfortable space, full of fun and laughter as we head into the Christmas season.

The Dominican Learning Centre

This week staff have had a site visit to the college’s new building, now officially known as the Dominican Learning Centre.  It is an amazing place, with many spaces and opportunities for teaching and learning. We look forward to seeing the building progress over the holiday period.  Our students will be the beneficiaries of this welcome addition to the College.

HSC Preparation and Research Workshop in the Library coming in 2026

Coming in early 2026, we will be hosting a workshop for our Year 12 students to support research through the library during their HSC studies. For students who would like to access this information over the holiday period, we are directing them to our Year 12 research presentation available on McCarthy Library homepage.

To access the McCarthy Library homepage, students go to the College apps page and click on the big red “i” Oliver MCC Library icon.  The presentation takes students through research options, at their own pace.  Through the presentation, students will be reminded of the benefits of accessing reliable research sites, putting information into their own words, and how to access resources to assist them with assessment tasks and preparation for the HSC.  We look forward to seeing students back in Term One 2026.

Junior English Class Visits

The English Renaissance Accelerated Reading program for Year 7 and 8 is continuing again with fortnightly visits for students to enjoy reading.  It is great to see students continue reading in the library to improve both their reading skills and scores.

This term, Year 8 Geography classes have been building their information literacy skills through the library and their own choice online searching, assessing websites based on usefulness and reliability criteria on the topics of interconnections technologies.  Topics included the positives and negatives of technologies such as the internet, social media and communication and have proven to be highly engaging for students.

It has been wonderful to see the growth in Year 8 students independently locating useful and reliable resources and responding to the issues contained in the articles.

Overdue library books

Currently our staff are reviewing overdue items borrowed in students’ names. If you have any library books at home, no matter how overdue, we are always pleased to see books returned.  Check in your lockers, your bags and at home and drop them in the Returns chute at the library, temporarily located in K6.  As always the cooperation of students and families is appreciated in locating and returning overdue books.
