Principal's Report

Welcome back to Term 3  

Welcome to Term 3. It has been wonderful to see our students and staff return with such a positive attitude for the second half of our school year. 

A particular highlight of the first week was the outstanding attendance at our Year 9 and 10 Subject Information Evening. It was fantastic to see so many families taking the opportunity to engage with staff, explore subject offerings and discuss the many pathways available to our students. Making informed subject selections is one of the most important decisions students make during their secondary schooling, and these conversations play a vital role in ensuring every student is well positioned for success in 2027 and beyond. If your family would like any further guidance or support, I encourage you to reach out to bring those questions along to the subject interviews as ourlined below next Tuesday. 

I would also like to acknowledge the disruption caused by the Australian Education Union's industrial action. We understand that changes to normal school operations can create challenges for families, and I sincerely appreciate the patience, understanding and flexibility shown by our school community throughout this process. Our priority has remained providing a safe and meaningful program for students while supporting staff through this period of industrial action. We remain hopeful that a resolution can be reached in the near future, limiting any further disruption to teaching and learning. 

As we move through the term, there is plenty to look forward to, with a range of learning opportunities, performances, sporting events and whole-school activities planned. I look forward to sharing these achievements with you as the term progresses and thank you, as always, for your ongoing support of Belmont High School.

• Tuesday 28th July: Year 9 & 10 – 2027 Year 10 & VCE Subject selection interviews (No classes for current Year 9’s & 10’s) 
• Friday 31st July & Saturday 1st August: BHS Performing Arts Show Case (PAC) 
• Tuesday 4th August: BHS Curriculum Day (Student free day) 
• Tuesday 18th August: Student Parent Teacher Interviews (12:00pm-7:00pm) 
• Friday 18th September: BHS House Music Competition and Final Day of Term 3  

Year 9 & 10 Subject Counselling Interviews – Tuesday 28th July 

A reminder to all Year 9 and Year 10 families that students are required to attend a Subject Counselling Interview on Tuesday 28 July. Appointments can be booked through Compass. 

These interviews provide an invaluable opportunity for students and their families to meet with a member of our subject allocation team to discuss subject selections, future pathways and individual goals. Together, we will map out each student's senior years at Belmont High School, ensuring they make informed decisions that align with their interests, strengths and post-school aspirations. 

The preferences confirmed through these interviews will also form the foundation of our 2027 timetable, allowing us to develop a program that best reflects student demand while providing the broadest possible range of learning opportunities. 

We encourage all families to make the most of this important opportunity and look forward to working with you as students begin planning the next stage of their educational journey. 

Belmont High Performing Arts Showcase  

Not long until opening night of the first ever BHS Performing Arts Showcase. We have two shows running on Friday 31st July and Saturday 1st August. There are so many talented performers at this school, and this showcase allows so many of them to have their moment in the spotlight. 

We have singers, dancers, actors, mime artist, bands - even a pub choir style sing along. There is something for everyone. 

The students have worked so hard, and it would mean the world to them to fill the PAC with your smiling faces.

House Music Competition – New Date 

One of Belmont High School's most treasured traditions has a new date for 2026. Our annual House Music Competition will now be held on the last day of Term 3, Friday 18th September. 

This change has been made to ensure that the many students who are also performing in the Belmont High School Performing Arts Showcase can fully participate in both outstanding events. We want our talented performers to have every opportunity to represent their House while also showcasing their abilities on stage. 

House Music is always one of the highlights of the school year, bringing together spirited competition, outstanding performances and plenty of House pride. We're excited about this year's event and are confident it will be a fantastic way to celebrate the end of Term 3 as our entire school community comes together. 

Further details, including rehearsal schedules and event information, will be shared with students and families in the coming weeks. We can't wait to see every House in full voice! 

State Cross Country Championships 

Last Thursday 16th July, I had the pleasure of joining five of our outstanding athletes at the State Cross Country Championships held at the Yarra Valley Racecourse. Competing in true cross-country conditions, our students embraced the challenge with determination, resilience and outstanding sportsmanship. 

Representing Belmont High School at a state championship is a significant achievement in itself, and each of our runners gave their absolute best against some of Victoria's strongest competitors. The athletes were: 

Congratulations to all five students on this fantastic achievement. We are extremely proud of your efforts and the way you continue to embody the Belmont High School values of Respect, Opportunity and Resilience. 

Respectful Communication 

Belmont High School greatly values the strong partnerships we have with our families. Open, honest and respectful communication is essential in ensuring we work together to achieve the best outcomes for our students. 

Our teachers take on a significant emotional and professional responsibility every day in supporting the learning, wellbeing and development of young people. We ask that all communication with staff reflects the same standards of respect and courtesy that we expect within our school community. 

If you have concerns that are more significant in nature, I encourage you to direct these through your child's House Leader, the relevant Assistant Principal or to me as Principal, rather than directing strongly worded correspondence to classroom teachers. Our leadership team is here to support both families and staff, and to help work through complex matters in a constructive and respectful way.
