Year 5 Camp

Our Grade 5 students recently returned from an unforgettable camp experience at Sovereign Hill. While the weather certainly kept us on our toes, with plenty of rain throughout our stay, it did little to dampen the excitement, enthusiasm and positive attitude shown by our students. They embraced every activity with resilience and made the most of every opportunity, creating wonderful memories along the way.

One of the biggest highlights of the camp was gold panning. Students eagerly rolled up their sleeves and searched for hidden treasures, with many successfully finding gold. The excitement and pride on students’ faces when they spotted those tiny flecks of gold was a joy to see and made this experience one they will not soon forget.

Students also ventured deep underground on the Red Hill Mine Tour, where they learned about the challenges and dangers faced by miners during the gold rush. The immersive Labyrinth of Gold provided a fascinating journey through the history of gold, helping students understand the impact that the discovery of gold had on Victoria and Australia.

A particular highlight for many was the spectacular AURA Night Show. Through stunning visual effects, storytelling and sound, students experienced the dramatic story of the goldfields and gained a deeper appreciation of the people who helped shape our state's history.

Throughout the camp, students participated in a range of hands-on learning experiences, including an education session exploring the significant contributions of Chinese people during the gold rush era. They also watched a gold pour demonstration, learning how gold is transformed from raw material into valuable bullion. Traditional activities such as candle dipping and a confectionery demonstration gave students a glimpse into everyday life in the 1850s and were enjoyed by all.

Beyond the educational experiences, camp provided a wonderful opportunity for students to strengthen friendships, develop independence and challenge themselves in new situations. Whether they were sharing meals, exploring Sovereign Hill together or supporting one another through the rainy conditions, students demonstrated teamwork, resilience and respect throughout the camp.

We are incredibly proud of the way our Grade 5 students represented Carnegie Primary School. Their enthusiasm, curiosity and positive behaviour made the camp a great success, and we are sure the memories and learning from Sovereign Hill will stay with them for many years to come.
