Spotlight on Learning

Jericho Community

Dear Families,

As we reach the end of Term 2, we would like to thank all students and families for their support throughout a busy and successful semester.

A special thank you to the families who attended our Parent-Teacher Evening. It was wonderful to meet with you and discuss your child's learning, achievements, and goals for the remainder of the year. Your partnership and support are greatly valued.

Please note that Term 3 will commence on Tuesday, 14 July. We hope all families enjoy a safe, restful, and enjoyable holiday break.

Thank you again for your continued support. We look forward to welcoming everyone back for another exciting term of learning.

Learning for Year 4 in Term 3:

Religious Education:

In Term 3 we are exploring "Concealed in the Old and Revealed in the New". We will be looking at Tradition and Scripture. This term many students are making their First Eucharist and so we will be reflecting on the early church traditions, the Mass and linking it to Passover. In week one we will be discussing "What is tradition? and "What are our family's traditions?"

English:

In Term 3, students will explore the texts Storm Boy and The Arrival, developing their comprehension, vocabulary and analytical skills. Through these rich texts, students will examine characters, themes and author techniques. In writing, students will focus on creating information reports and narratives, learning how to organise ideas, use descriptive language and write for different purposes and audiences.

Mathematics:

Next term, students will continue learning about multiplication and division. They will practise using a range of strategies to solve problems, explore the connection between multiplication and division, and explain their mathematical thinking. Students will build confidence and fluency when working with larger numbers in real-life situations.

Integrated Curriculum:

In Semester 2, Year 4 students will explore the Arts through Drama, Music and Dance, developing their creativity, collaboration and communication skills. In Term 3, students will begin with Drama, using storytelling, performance and role-play to explore ideas and express their understanding. Throughout the unit, students will make meaningful connections to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives, fostering respect for culture, identity and diverse ways of knowing and sharing stories.

Auslan:

In Term 3, students will continue to develop their Auslan skills with a focus on signed stories and language features. Students will be learning how Auslan stories create a 3D picture so you can see what is happening. They will explore how some verbs in Auslan can be translated in different ways to clearly show how an action is done. Students will also look at how different languages have different rules. In Auslan, words like 'yesterday' or 'two days ago' are signed at the start of a sentence, meaning there is no need to show past tense like the '-ed' in 'played.

Students will also continue to build on their knowledge of signed stories and Deaf culture. Students will discover how signed stories are a fun way to use your imagination and be creative, including how to show a character's actions in a signed story. They will also learn that signs relating to thinking such as remember, know and wonder are signed around the head, and will practise these through signed games. Students will also explore how Deaf people around the world use signed languages to talk about what is important to them, and will learn about the things that can contribute to a Deaf or hearing person's identity.

Social & Emotional Learning:

In Term 3, students will revisit the routines and expectations of St Thomas. They will strengthen their understanding of school procedures, continue building positive relationships, and reflect on how they can contribute to a safe, respectful and supportive learning environment.
