AFL Senior Girls - LMR

Our Year 11 & 12 Senior Girls AFL team took on Mildura’s St Joseph’s College at Weeroona Oval in Bendigo on Wednesday 22 May.

The sun was shining, the music was pumping for our warm up, and the girls could not wait to jump into the action. Our first quarter was strong with the ball not entering the defensive 50 at all. Lexi and Kaitlyn kicked the first few goals and continued their dominance throughout the entire game, receiving best player votes from the umpires. Both girls kicked three goals each as we stormed home in the final term, our best quarter of the game. Other goal kickers were Emma, Grace and Marli. There were many outstanding players who relentlessly tackled and chased the ball for the entire game and we came home with an outstanding win 9.17.71 to 2.4.16. Bring on the next round!

Thank you to our sensational coaching staff on the day in Matt Carnie, Clare Orton and Jo McMillan.

AFL Boys Premier League - Round 2

Our Senior Boys footy team had a resounding win against Bendigo Senior Secondary College in Round 2 of the School Sports Victoria’s Premier League Competition on Wednesday 15 May.

Our boys tackled the first quarter with intent, kicking off to a great start with goal sneak Bailey Marsh putting it through the big sticks. We took the game on with Cody Walker streaming out of the middle kicking it long to the sticky mits of Hudson Kellet who got on the end of 3 goals for the day. After wining the first quarter with ease, a come back from Bendigo early in the second saw some nerves kick in amongst our boys. But there was no stopping our midfield who worked extremely hard all day getting the ball down forward, with Cody Mann’s awesome ruck work putting the boys ahead, kicking 4.4 for the quarter. Ollie Bray clunked some massive marks and put his first goal through ensuring our boys went into halftime with their heads held high. We were ready and roaring for the third quarter after a special Mr Cantwell chat and a Lachie Hogan rev-up to get the boys really firing. We got off to a solid start in the third, with Makai Cronin kicking 2, including a great goal from the boundary, and winning the third 2.4 to Bendigo's 2.1. Coming into the final quarter, our boys were just way too dominant, winning the day and belting out the school song at the top of their lungs.

SJC: 11.12.78

Bendigo SSC: 7.11.53

Goal kickers: Hudson Kellet 3; Cody Walker 3; Bailey Marsh 2; Makai Cronin 2; Ollie Bray 1

Best on Ground: Cody Walker.

Our Senior boys will play again in Round 3 on Wednesday 29 May.

Our thanks to coaches Justin Cantwell, Matt Carnie and Kristian McNicol.

Campaspe Junior Football

Our Year 7 & 8 Boys football teams played their first round of SSV football in Rochester on Wednesday 15 May.

Our Year 8 team, coached by Les Butler and David Armfield, played consistently good footy throughout the entire day, winning their three matches convincingly.

In our first game against St Augs (Kyabram) in slippery conditions we showed excellent forward line pressure, kicking 6.4 and keeping our opposition scoreless. Our standout players were Jackson Butterworth, Nate Smith and Lynkoln Richardson, with goal kickers including Charlie Sutton, Max Potter, Keoni Anderson, Lynkoln Richardson and Jack Schroeter.

Our second game against an undersized Echuca College resulted in a very comfortable victory to our boys, with our midfield dominant and winning most clearances. Better players were Max Potter, Marlon Micalizzi, Ryan Caldwell and Jackson Butterworth.

Our third match was the final against St Mary’s Of The Angels (Nathalia), with our boys playing the best they had all day, keeping the opposition scoreless. Charlie Sutton kicked a whopping 6 goals and was in the better players alongside Campbell Keele, Jackson Butterworth and Arley Canham. Final score was 15.9.99 to 0.0.

Our Year 7 boys team, coached by Matt Butler and Tyler Phillips, played two games for the day, against Rochester High School and St Mary’s of The Angels (Nathalia) - winning both matches easily.

In our first game against Rochester the boys did extremely well. Ollie Spring and Tommy Teasdale Dohnt were fantastic in the middle. We kicked 4 goals by half time with Beau Griffiths and Tom Cooke standouts up forward, helping us take a convincing lead which we carried on for the game. SJC v Rochester: 55 - 0

In our second match against SMOTA we started slowly and were up by a goal at half time. Taj Maddox and Max Burge were brilliant in the backline, to stop the opposition. The boys played great team football in the second half and secured a convincing win. Mason Retallick and Angus Clyne were fantastic with their pressure in the second half.

SJC v SMOTA: 33 - 14

Both our Year 7 & 8 Boys teams now progress to the next round in Swan Hill in early Term 3.

Annabel Johnson Visit

Our intermediate and senior girls football teams had an extra special training run last Friday with a surprise visit from AFLW West Coast player Annabel Johnson.

Annabel is a 2018 graduate of St Joseph’s College, and also worked at our school with our Learning Enhancement team in 2019.

She was recruited by the Geelong Cats as the 15th pick in the AFL Women’s draft in 2021, after only taking up AFL at the beginning of that year. She was traded from Geelong to West Coast at the end of 2023.

Annabel generously led a one-off session with our footy girls at Vic Park on Friday during a visit back to her home town.

We are hugely appreciative of her time and expertise, and look forward to watching our girls put some new skills into action in their upcoming matches.
