Our School and House Captains went into the city last week to participate in the GRIP Student Leadership Conference. It was a wonderful day full of learning and fun. Topics included:

  • What should leaders do at our school?
  • Integrity - The way I can lead everyday
  • New ideas for our school
  • The challenges leaders face with a new idea

Please read our students' reflections:

The GRIP Leadership conference was a great experience for the school and house captains, and a very special opportunity to learn about leadership and how leaders act. I learned many things, including how leaders don’t just stand there and talk, but they also interact and make connections with everyone. I especially liked how we went up to other schools and asked them questions about our tasks. I went in thinking that we would just listen to a speech, but we actually had breaks and interactions as well. It was an amazing day!

My favourite part of the GRIP Leadership conference was coming up with ideas for our school. I also listened to what other schools had to say about helping their school. We clarified what an idea is and isn’t based on the game Swipee. My favourite quote we learned was “Most people choose what is easy, but leaders choose what is necessary”.

I learnt that actions are meant to match your words and that most people do what’s easiest but leaders do what’s necessary. My highlight of the day from grip leadership conference was when e collaborated with other schools to do a lots of activities!

I had a great day at the GRIP leadership conference. We learned a lot of things there but my favourite thing was the loud noises. People got chosen to go up on the stage and do an activity. My favourite activity was when you had to guess the song from the picture. Also all the other lessons got us to see lots of different people from different schools. It was an awesome day!

The GRIP Leadership conference was a memorable experience.  My favourite part was the fun things we did after the learning segments called Loud Noises. I was even on stage for one of the activities. What I took away from the day was how to be a good leader and role model.

The GRIP leadership conference was amazing.  My most memorable experience was learning about the challenges that disappear when you come up with an original idea to help your community, school, and your fellow students. My favourite highlight was when Julian King, the school cross country record holder, cheated in the race and then lied about it. He explained how he came to tell the truth and that's how I learnt about integrity. The GRIP leadership conference was so fun and such a memorable experience that I’ll carry in my heart through my journey as a leader at Donvale.

My highlight wasn’t something funny or a game but a video that hit my heart in a memorable way. It was a video about how school kids were using rubbish and recycled materials to make art works. They also helped their community as well by making dementia fidgets to help the elderly and giving their school a hand made book nook out of recycled materials and colourful bits of scraps. That was a highlight for me as it made me feel like there’s so many things I can do for my community.

The GRIP Leadership conference was an amazing experience where we got to learn a lot about leadership. My most memorable thing was the movie clip game where they would play a movie and we had to guess what character traits they were showing like making new friends and many many more. Overall we all had an amazing time!

Julian King was so fun and the Loud Noise game was also fun. I learnt how to be respectful and a great leader. We had so much fun. I wish I could do it again.

The GRIP Leadership conference was a great experience for me and a lot of fun. There was an activity that included 1 person from each school to come up and do fun activities like ‘Guess the Song’ and 'What side can make the most noise’ . I had lots of fun and learnt so much.

The day of the Leadership conference was a really fun day with a bunch of different activities where we learned all kinds of things. We learnt how to be a good leader  and we also learned how to think of different ideas for our school. Everything was really fun but my favourite was Julian explaining how you must always tell the truth. Lastly I loved the song guessing game because it was all about teamwork.
