Connecting with Your Child Through GEM Chats

In our busy lives, taking time to connect with our children is one of the most important things we can do. Small, meaningful conversations help children feel heard, valued and supported, while also strengthening relationships and building their emotional wellbeing.

At school, we use GEM chats as a simple way to encourage these connections. GEM stands for Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness, and these three areas provide wonderful opportunities for children to reflect, share and talk about their experiences.

GEM chats don't need to be long or complicated. They can happen around the dinner table, in the car, before bed or while walking together. Try asking questions such as:

Gratitude: What is something you were grateful for today?

Empathy: Did you notice anyone who needed a little kindness today?

Mindfulness: What is something you noticed today using your senses?

The most important part is to listen. Put aside distractions, show interest and allow your child time to talk. You don't always need to provide an answer or solve a problem. Sometimes, simply knowing that someone is there to listen can make a big difference.

Regular GEM chats can help children develop emotional awareness, empathy and positive relationships, while creating opportunities for parents and children to connect each day.

Remember, connection doesn't have to take a lot of time. A few minutes of genuine conversation can make a lasting difference.
