Year 3/4 News

Literacy
In Reading, students have focused on the mentor text The Stone Lion to explore the author’s craft. They have investigated how authors use clues within a text, together with readers’ background knowledge, to make meaningful inferences. Students have also explored how carefully chosen vocabulary adds detail and depth to a story, and how sentence structure can engage and maintain the reader’s interest. They have used evidence from the text to explain and support their ideas about key themes.
Students have also continued working in their reading groups, developing their comprehension skills through collaborative discussions. They have continued to build their reading stamina during independent reading sessions, strengthening their ability to read for sustained periods and engage thoughtfully with texts.
In Writing, students have explored the key features and structure of narrative texts, including character development, setting, plot and descriptive language. They have applied these skills by planning and drafting their own creative narratives with a focus on capturing the reader’s attention. Students have also begun to edit and refine their writing, using feedback to strengthen their narratives.
Numeracy
Students have been exploring elapsed time and converting between different units of time. They have made real-life connections by planning and creating their own timetables, applying their understanding of time in meaningful and practical ways.
Students have also continued to develop their problem-solving skills through a range of open-ended questions involving the four operations. They have explored different strategies, explained their thinking, and applied their mathematical knowledge to solve problems in a variety of ways.
Inquiry
This term, our two Inquiry topics focus on Geography with Mr Gray and Music with Ms Smith.
Throughout the Geography unit, students will develop a sense of wonder, curiosity and respect for places, environments, people and cultures around the world. They will explore the diverse ways in which people interact with and understand the world around them.
In Music, students will explore how music can communicate ideas, emotions, stories and messages. They will develop their understanding of key musical elements and investigate how these elements work together to influence the way music sounds, feels and communicates meaning.
