Spotlight on Learning

Dear Grade 3 Families,

Welcome to Week 2! 

Please ensure you check the Reminders below every newsletter. 

In Week 1, students learned about the following:

In Religious Education, students learned about how Jesus chose and sent the Twelve Apostles to share God's love and the Good News, and why he entrusted them to teach, serve others, and spread his message.

In English, students learned spelling patterns for the /or/ sound, continued developing their handwriting, typing, grammar, reading, and writing skills, responded to The Iron Man, and planned and wrote the introduction to an information report.

In Mathematics, students explored the relationship between multiplication and division, used bar models to solve problems, and explained their mathematical thinking.

In Auslan, students explored how movement changes the meaning of some verbs and practised using signs to communicate actions clearly.

In Social and Emotional Learning, students began exploring gender norms and stereotypes, learning that everyone should feel free to enjoy different interests and be themselves.

In Integrated Studies (Performing Arts), students created a narrative outline and designed a main character for their own shadow puppet play.

Learning for Term 3, Week 3

Religious Education:

In Religious Education, students will learn about the Holy Spirit and the important role He plays in the lives of Christians. Through exploring Scripture, including John 14:16–17 and 26, students will discover how Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit as a helper and guide for his followers. They will explore who the Holy Spirit is, what He does, and how He helps Christians live like Jesus by making loving, kind, and faithful choices. Students will also identify examples of how the Holy Spirit continues to guide and support Christians in their everyday lives.

English:

In English, students will continue developing their spelling, handwriting, typing, grammar, reading, vocabulary, and writing skills. They will explore the suffixes ‘ful’ and ‘less’, practise creating compound sentences, and improve their reading fluency while responding to The Iron Man. Students will expand their vocabulary, identify key words and main ideas, and practise using note-taking strategies. They will also revisit the purpose, structure, and features of information reports as they plan and write a body paragraph.

Mathematics:

In Mathematics, students will continue developing their understanding of division by solving equal group problems. They will use bar models to visually represent equal groups, identify known and unknown quantities, and make connections between division situations and mathematical representations. Through problem-solving activities, students will practise sharing quantities equally and explaining their strategies and mathematical thinking.

Integrated Curriculum:

In Integrated Studies, students are learning that shadow puppet performances follow a narrative structure with a beginning, middle, and end. They will explore how characters, settings, and events work together to tell an engaging story before brainstorming ideas for their own shadow puppet performance.

Auslan:

In Auslan, students will explore how different languages have different rules and structures. They will learn that Auslan shows time differently to English, with signs such as ‘yesterday’ or ‘two days ago’ placed at the beginning of a sentence rather than adding a past tense ending like ‘-ed’. Students will compare English and Auslan sentence structures and identify key differences between the two languages.

Social & Emotional Learning:

In Social and Emotional Learning, students are exploring how everyone has their own unique interests, preferences, and strengths. They are learning that hobbies, games, colours, and activities are for everyone, regardless of whether someone is a boy or a girl. Through class discussions and activities, students are practising recognising and respecting differences, and using kind, inclusive language when talking about themselves and others.

What you can do at home:

• Encourage your child to read daily and discuss the characters, events, and new vocabulary from their books.
• Practise spelling words together by identifying patterns, sounds, and different ways letters can represent sounds.
• Support multiplication and division skills through everyday activities such as sharing items equally, grouping objects, or solving simple number problems.
• Encourage creativity by helping your child design characters, tell stories, or create simple puppets for imaginative play.
• Talk about kindness, inclusion, and fairness by discussing different perspectives and challenging stereotypes in everyday situations.

Important Reminders:

• Fidget Toys

  We kindly ask that students do not bring fidget toys to school unless their use is a planned adjustment in consultation with Allied Health Professionals. Students who bring fidget toys without an approved adjustment will be asked to place them in their school bag for the remainder of the day to take home. We appreciate your support in encouraging your child to leave fidget toys at home.

Plastic bottle caps needed for this Term's Integrated unit! 

Please send washed plastic bottle caps (soft drink, milk etc) to school with your child whenever possible. Your support is greatly appreciated!
