Spotlight on Learning

Bethany Community

Dear Families,

It has been another busy and productive week in Year 5 as students continued consolidating their learning across all curriculum areas. This week, students also participated in the Kids Roar program, where they explored important topics including consent, online safety, and recognising warning signs in their bodies. These sessions encouraged students to develop practical strategies for keeping themselves safe, seeking help from trusted adults, and making respectful and responsible choices both at school and online. We look forward to another exciting week of learning ahead.

Learning in Year 5 for Term 3:

Religious Education:

Next week, students will learn about Jesus washing the feet of his disciples and explore what this teaches us about serving others with humility, kindness and love. They will discuss how the tradition of foot washing reflects Jesus' example of respecting, caring for and helping others, and consider how they can live out these values in their own lives.

English:

Next week in English, students will continue reading Thomas Appleby – Convict Boy while consolidating their information report writing. They will focus on writing effective body paragraphs with clear topic sentences, relevant supporting details and concluding sentences, while using precise vocabulary, cohesive language features and editing for grammar, spelling and punctuation.

Mathematics:

This week, students will learn how to find equivalent fractions with related denominators. They will use visual models and number patterns to recognise equivalent fractions, explain their reasoning, and build a deeper understanding of how fractions can represent the same value in different ways.

Integrated Curriculum:

Next week, students will develop their drama skills by creating believable characters using expressive techniques. They will make thoughtful choices about how their characters think, feel and behave, remain in role during drama activities, and reflect on how their choices helped bring their characters to life.

Auslan:

Next week, students will explore how some Auslan verbs can be translated in different ways to show a specific action. They will learn that signs such as 'open' and 'put on' can change depending on the context and will practise identifying the correct translation for different situations.

Social & Emotional Learning:

Next week, students will learn about stereotypes and how they can influence the way people think about others. They will explore common gender stereotypes, discuss why these assumptions can be unfair or limiting, and recognise that every person has unique gifts, strengths and dignity. Students will also consider respectful and inclusive alternatives to stereotypes in everyday situations.
