Spotlight on Learning

Dear Families,

This week, students participated in the Kids ROAR sessions, where they learnt about protective behaviours and strategies to keep their bodies safe. One way students explored this concept was by using a crocodile toy with teeth that can suddenly snap shut when a tooth is pressed. Each child had the opportunity to press a tooth, and some students decided not to participate because they felt it might be unsafe. They listened to their feelings and used the signals from their bodies to make a choice that felt safe and right for them. They explored what to do if they ever feel unsafe, and we encourage families to continue these important conversations at home.

Last week, we began exploring the dance, drama and music which is our inquiry for the semester. It was great to see the enthusiasm from our students in learning new things.

Kids ROAR incursion

The week ahead:

Religious Education: Next week, students will explore the story of the Good Samaritan through discussion and role-play, learning how Jesus taught us to show kindness, care and compassion to others. They will reflect on how these values help us be positive members of our school and wider community. 

Students will also revisit last term's learning by reflecting on how they cared for their seed pots and make connections to the Parable of the Sower, exploring how we grow through care, faith and positive choices.

Writing:  Next week, we will continue learning about writing postal letters through the book "Ernie dances to the Didgeridoo" by Alison Lester. Students will continue learning about the use of dotted thirds.

Reading:  Students will be learning the graphemes often referred to as ‘soft c’. C makes an /s/ sound as long as it is followed by an e, i or y.

Mathematics:  Students will continue learning about sharing different amounts and exploring what happens when a number cannot be shared equally between groups. This provides an introduction to division, and the majority of students are engaging well with the concept.

Next week, we will also begin exploring a range of sports-based mathematics activities linked to the Commonwealth Games.

Integrated Curriculum:  Next week, we are unpacking a song from Aunty Sharron mirii Bell - Winhangagigilanha. Winhangagigilanha is a beautiful song about looking after ourselves by looking after nature. The song reminds us to breathe, to take only what we need from the environment and to respect the connections between all living things.

Social and Emotional Learning: Students will continue learning that everyone is different and that boys and girls can enjoy the same toys, colours, games, activities and future jobs. They will talk about how people sometimes make assumptions based on gender and why it is important to respect everyone's interests, choices and feelings.

What you can do at home

• Listen to your child read regularly and encourage them to use their decoding strategies when they come to an unfamiliar word.

• After reading, ask your child to retell what happened, share their favourite part, or explain how a character was feeling.

• Re-reading familiar texts is a great way to build confidence, fluency and expression.

• Notice numbers in everyday places and ask questions like, “How many altogether?” or “How do you know?”

• A curious question to ask this week could be: What traditions does your family, school or community celebrate?

Important Reminders:

• Fidget Toys

  We kindly ask that students do not bring fidget toys to school unless their use is a planned adjustment in consultation with Allied Health Professionals. Students who bring fidget toys without an approved adjustment will be asked to place them in their school bag for the remainder of the day to take home. We appreciate your support in encouraging your child to leave fidget toys at home.

• Please ensure that you are labelling your child's belongings.

• Can we please ask for a pair of socks and underwear to be placed in the front zip pocket of your child's school bag in case of a toileting accident.
