Foundation – Year 2 Recap
Welcome back to Semester 2! Students have kicked off the new term with fantastic energy, jumping straight back into active learning. We began by revisiting our core PE expectations, giving students a fresh reminder of how we move safely, listen respectfully, handle equipment with care, and show great sportsmanship. Setting these foundational expectations early ensures that our learning environment remains safe, inclusive, and fun for everyone as we jump into a busy second half of the year.
Over the past few weeks, our physical focus has been on the fundamental movement skill of jumping and landing. Students have been practicing two-foot take-offs for distance and height, learning to absorb their landing softly with bent knees using our safe "motorbike landing" position. Through mini-obstacle courses and dynamic challenges, students are building the balance, spatial awareness, and leg strength needed for a wide variety of sports.
Equally important has been our focus on teamwork and building a positive community in our classes. Students have worked closely with partners and small groups to solve physical challenges, putting a strong emphasis on encouraging one another. It has been fantastic to hear classmates cheering each other on, celebrating personal improvements, and learning that being a great teammate is just as rewarding as mastering a new skill.
Year 3 and Year 4 Recap
Our Year 3 and 4 students have been enthusiastically participating in a Soccer unit this term, inspired by the excitement of the FIFA Mens' World Cup.
Throughout the unit, students have been developing their dribbling, passing, shooting, and teamwork skills, whilst also building their understanding of game strategies and fair play. It has been fantastic to see their confidence and sportsmanship continue to grow each lesson.
This week, we introduced a new whole-class teamwork challenge at the beginning of the lesson. These five-minute activities are designed to build cooperation, communication, and positivity. This week's challenge, 'Keepy Uppy', saw students work together to keep a giant ball in the air using volleyball-style taps, aiming to achieve the highest number of consecutive touches before the ball reached the ground.
Year 5 and Year 6 Recap
Year 5/6 students have recently completed our unit on softball, where they demonstrated impressive progress in their fielding, throwing mechanics, and strike-zone decision making. Throughout the unit, students worked hard on tactical positioning, strategic base running, and communication in the field, showing a great understanding of how individual roles contribute to team strategy and success.
We have now launched into our volleyball unit, shifting our focus to court awareness, quick reaction time, and net play dynamics. Students are currently learning the foundational skills of digging, setting, and serving, with an emphasis on maintaining control and building controlled rallies.
What's Ahead for Physical Education?
Looking ahead, we wish the best of luck to the select Middle and Senior students who will be representing STAPS at the upcoming District Athletics. We are proud of their efforts and know they will represent our school with determination and great sportsmanship.
Enjoy your weekend,
