Netball Schools Cup

All Saints sent an enthusiastic team of 10 athletes to compete in the annual Netball Schools Cup in Wagga.

We had a mixture of those who have played before and those who were quite new to the game.

The focus of the day was on participation and teamwork. All players had the opportunity to try a variety of positions, which sometimes confused even our most experienced of players as their roles changed. It was great to see the adaptability of our students, some shining in positions they would not normally play.

Our team were as follows:

Leo Spiteri - Quick around the court and leaping for the intercepts. A definite asset to the team, planting his feet (most of the time) and enjoying the physicality of the game.

Kasey McIntyre - A long-time observer of the game, was continually animated throughout the day, shining in the goal shooter bib - scoring 5 goals in a single half!

Maya MacKay - Tall and lanky, her reach was impressive. She had the safest feet in the team, making sure to plant them whenever she had the ball. Her playground practice under the ring is also paying off, as she converted her few opportunities into goals.

Molly Forrest - Performed particularly well in the midcourt, making sure to be an option when moving the ball forward to our goal line. She regularly lost her opponent and was in space at just the right moment - a difficult skill to learn!

Lois Fraumeni - Probably the most improved player of the tournament, leading into space and using her voice (for good), calling for the ball, and aggressively challenging her opponents. This is a definite change in attitude from the last carnival and was most impressive. Her only hiccup was an attempted goal, while in Goal Keeper, but she quickly brushed this misstep off and continued with the game.

Kaitlyn Lewis - Clearly a natural sportswoman, reading the play and intercepting the ball at will, coming from behind to snatch the ball from unsuspecting players. She shone in goal defence but was happy to have a go in all positions.

Charlotte Sprattling - New to All Saints this year, she was a star recruit. Adding some height, alongside some other lanky players, she was a real asset, especially in defence. She had a hard first game, but didn’t drop her head, she just kept on persisting and restricted the opposition to only a few goals, allowing All Saints to bounce back in the second half and take the win (in an unscored match). She may choose to take up netball in a more official capacity after this experience.

Agnes De Bono - Obviously shines in Goal Attack, her preferred position. However, her most impressive half was played in the Goal Defence bib, frustrating the opposition with countless turn overs as she stood in front of the circle and repelled attack after attack after attack. Her long arms intercepted innumerable balls and gave her attacking teammates the opportunity to score more goals. Everyone knows games are won in defence, and Agnes proved this with her skilful play.

Rose Wright - Quick and whippy, Rose sprints out from the line to call for the centre pass over and over again. She makes multiple efforts to break free from her opponent and wrestles every ball from her opponents that she can. Occasionally called for contact or asked to return the ball to her opposition, who had first possession, she is developing a keen instinct for contesting every ball.

Vivienne McGrath - Tall and strong, Vivienne shines under the ring. Her skill at rebounding was second to none. She made sure to follow the ball in and take another shot (and sometimes another, and maybe another) if she missed her first. I can see a very bright future for her at either end of the court.

Well done to our entire team, who obviously enjoyed the day and played so well together.

Thank you to all of the parents who came along in support. I know the kids enjoy having you there to witness their achievements.
