From 1/2 Classrooms

Term 2 is flying by and we can’t believe we are already in week 8. We have been little busy bees in Grade 1 & 2 this term and would love to share what we have been learning about lately in the classroom....
Writing
Our main focus this term has been on narrative writing and we have just completed our own narrative stories. We built up slowly, focusing on each area in detail before writing our stories.
We began by choosing a character and looking at the inside traits (characteristics that describe our character) and outside traits (physical features of our character). We drew our character and thought of 2-3 inside and outside traits to describe them.
When then moved onto our setting. Once we chose a setting we had to complete a setting T-chart. We had to 'zoom out' on our setting and look at the big picture. We then had to 'zoom in' and focus on the smaller detail in the setting.
And lastly, we chose a problem and came up with a solution for our story. We focussed on the following questions when planning our problem and solution:
- Who is my character?
- What problem will happen in my story?
- How will my the problem be solved?
Whilst writing our stories we focused on:
- starting sentences with a capital letter
- using boundary punctuation
- sentence structure
- paragraphs to separate events
- story flow
- introduction of character, setting etc
- introduction of problem
- solution to problem
editing our story to ensure it makes sense and to improve meaning
Here are some samples of our writing pieces, happy reading!
Maths games to support learning
For the past few weeks, we have revisited place value during our Number sessions. For those of you who attended our Special people morning you would have had the opportunity to play some of our maths games we use in class to reinforce our understanding of place value. Here are some of those games if you wish to play at home.
Diary Dates:
- Week 10 - Parent/Teacher Interviews - Wednesday 24th June
- Week 10 - Whole School Expo - Thursday 25th June
Year 1 and 2 Home Learning:
To support our learning at school, we ask that students complete the following home learning each week:
- Read nightly take-home book (for maximum 20 minutes each night) and record in Home Learning Book
- Complete the weekly activity from the Maths Home Learning Grid (glued in back of Home Learning Book)
Home Learning Books should come to school each day.
A reminder that Parent Teacher interviews have open on Compass this week. If you have not booked one in please head to Compass to organise this. They will be held on Wednesday 24th June, which will be a pupil free day.
Thank you for your continued support!
