Foundation Classroom

This term, students have been introduced to the idea of multiculturalism. We started by discussing and exploring what fairness means, how people can be different and have varying needs. We learnt about how it's good to be unique. Through the children's book, "Elmer", we learnt how to celebrate differences.
We connected to our topic each week with our share times. Students spoke about their own families, cultural foods and traditions. We are lucky to have such a multicultural class and so many proud students who shared about where their families come from.
One week, the share time focus was food. We had Tukai bring in fijian donuts and Arianah shared chicken noodle soup from Greece. It was such a special opportunity for students to bring in their favourite foods from their culture and share it with the class. This was definitely a highlight from the term.
Another week’s sharetime focus was music when Noah played the berimbau for the class. We have also learnt about different celebrations. Alvis brought in golden horses that he was given from his parents at Chinese New Year. They symbolise good luck.
We also learnt about Australian culture and read different dream time stories by first nation people. We learnt about the importance of protecting our country. We learnt what it means to be Australian, and that you can be born in another country and move to Australia and still be Australian.
Students made a passport and we have been travelling to different countries. Each Friday over the last three weeks, we learnt about different countries and their culture.
We visited Malaysia and learnt about moon kites, we learnt about cuckoo clocks in Germany and stained glass windows in France. Every time a student learnt about that country they got a stamp in their passport.
