Mental Health in Primary Schools (MHiPS)

At BPPS, our staff engage in ongoing professional learning throughout the year, aligned with the goals outlined in our Annual Implementation Plan (AIP). Building staff knowledge and capability in the High Impact Wellbeing Strategies (HIWS) remains an ongoing focus in our wellbeing professional learning sessions.

The High Impact Wellbeing Strategies (HIWS) are 7 practical, evidence based strategies that have demonstrated a significant and positive effect on student wellbeing. The HIWS align with the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM 2.0). They work alongside the High Impact Teaching Strategies (HITS) and support teachers to teach more effectively.

The HIWS were developed to support classroom teachers and schools to promote student mental health and wellbeing.

The HIWS are:

Build Relationships with Students

Facilitate peer relationships

Establish and maintain classroom expectations

Support inclusion and belonging

Foster student self-efficacy

Engage students

Promote coping strategies and facilitate referrals

Each strategy in the HIWS can be used in an integrated way to promote student wellbeing. Teachers can use multiple strategies simultaneously to meet the needs of their students.

The HIWS are implemented as part of a whole school approach to promoting student wellbeing.

The HIWS are most effective when they are integrated with other mental health and wellbeing initiatives, frameworks and programs, including Respectful Relationships and Visible Wellbeing, and the Personal and Social capabilities in the Victorian Curriculum.

At BPPS, the HIWS form an important part of our whole school approach to wellbeing. These evidence based practices help build staff capability and support positive student wellbeing, engagement and learning outcomes through a safe, inclusive and supportive environment.

Thank you for supporting our school's commitment to student wellbeing.

Kind regards,
