The Hidden Dangers of Vaping

Over the past few years, vaping has become increasingly common among young people across Australia. While some people believe vaping is a harmless alternative to smoking, the reality is very different. At Wedderburn College, we are committed to educating our students and families about the significant health risks associated with vaping and maintaining a safe, healthy learning environment for everyone.

Many vaping products contain nicotine, a highly addictive substance that can affect the developing brain. During adolescence, the brain is still growing and developing, and nicotine exposure can impact attention, memory, learning and emotional regulation. Young people who become addicted to nicotine may find it difficult to concentrate in class and can experience increased anxiety and irritability when they are unable to vape.

One of the greatest concerns is that many students do not fully understand what is in the products they are using. Illegal or unregulated vapes may contain unknown chemicals and contaminants. Research has shown that vaping aerosols can contain substances that may damage the lungs and respiratory system. While research into the long-term health effects continues, there is already clear evidence that vaping is not harmless.

The impact of vaping extends beyond physical health. Students who vape may experience reduced participation in sport and physical activity due to decreased lung function. Addiction can also lead to financial pressures, secrecy, and behavioural changes that affect friendships, family relationships and academic performance.

Schools across Victoria have also seen vaping become a significant wellbeing and behavioural issue. Vaping devices can be easily concealed and may be used during the school day, disrupting learning and exposing other students to inappropriate behaviours. At Wedderburn College, we have high expectations for all students and are committed to providing a learning environment that is safe, respectful and free from smoking and vaping.

We encourage parents and carers to have open, honest conversations with their children about vaping. Asking questions, listening without judgement and discussing the health risks can make a significant difference. If you suspect your child is vaping, approaching the conversation calmly and seeking support is often the most effective response.

Wedderburn College will continue to educate students about the risks associated with vaping through our wellbeing programs, health education curriculum and pastoral care initiatives. Our aim is not only to enforce school expectations but also to support students in making informed, healthy choices that will benefit them throughout their lives.

Together, by working in partnership with families, we can help our young people understand the risks of vaping and encourage healthier choices for a brighter future.
