Foundation

For the remainder of this term in Foundation, students are exploring rich literacy learning through digraphs and fairy tales, building strong vocabulary and comprehension during Shared Reading.

In Writing, we are extending our sentences using colourful semantics, helping students include "who, what doing and where" to create detailed and meaningful stories.

In Mathematics, students will complete their unit on sharing before moving into collecting and interpreting data, learning how to organise information and make simple conclusions.

Our Humanities and Science focus on living things will be brought to life with our upcoming excursion to Myuna Farm, where students can observe animals and plants in real contexts and deepen their understanding of how living things grow, change and interact with their environment.

Year 1

In English we are looking at inferring, enjoying our shared reads and we are exploring long vowel sounds for example i-e. We are beginning to understand the structure of Procedure Writing.

Maths we are looking at Measuring Length using informal units and Space - classify shapes, identify similar and different and follow directions to get to a certain location

In Science we are looking at Living and Non Living Things - habitats and what certain animals need for survival.

In Religion we are looking at Baptism and how we belong to God's family and what this might mean for us in today's world.

Year 2

In Year Two for Mathematics over the next three weeks we will be focusing on using a range of methods to collect, record, represent and interpret categorical data in response to questions. We will acquire data for categorical variables through surveys, observation, experiment and using digital tools; sort data into relevant categories and display data using lists and tables. Then students will learn to create different graphical representations of data using software where appropriate; compare the different representations, and identify and describe common and distinctive features in response to questions

Yaert 2 students are exploring the shared text Nim’s Island to strengthen their comprehension skills, with a particular focus on making inferences. They are learning to draw on their own knowledge and experiences to connect with the story and develop both literal and inferred understandings. Throughout the term, students will practise a range of comprehension strategies, including visualising, predicting, summarising and questioning. We encourage all Year Two students to continue reading regularly at home. Using their phonic knowledge and growing vocabulary, they can work towards reading with increasing accuracy and understanding, re‑reading and self‑correcting when needed.

For writing, Year 2 will be learning about informative texts. We will explore the purpose and structure of informative writing and learn how to organise our ideas clearly so that we can teach our readers about a topic. Students will investigate a range of interesting topics, research facts and gather information from different sources. They will then use their research to plan, write, edit and publish their own informative texts, focusing on including factual information, interesting details, topic-specific vocabulary and clear sentences. Through this learning, students will develop their research, reading and writing skills while becoming confident young information writers.

Year 3

In Year 3, we are continuing to read The One and Only Ivan with a focus on inferencing by looking at the connections between the experiences of characters in the text and their own personal experiences.

Year 3 students are completing their narrative writing and beginning to learn the structure of a procedural text. Through both text types we are focusing on being able to group like ideas to form simple paragraphs, with use of adjectives to add meaning to the text.

Dur8ing Mathematcis, Year 3 students are focussing on multiplication, particularly multiplication facts for 3, 4, 5 and 10. We will then take this knowledge and apply the facts to develop the related division facts, that is developing an understanding of the inverse relationship.

We have begun learning about angles looking at what right angles are and identifying angles that are smaller, larger and equal to right angles. Students will be undertaking a unit of work for location, interpreting and creating two-dimensional representations of familiar environments, locating key landmarks and objects relative to each other.

Year 4

Over the next three weeks during Mathemtics, students in Year 4 will be learning to estimate and compare angles — acute, obtuse, straight, reflex and revolution — and understand how each relates to a right angle. We’ll also be describing and classifying 2D shapes by their features, including lines of symmetry and rotational symmetry, and exploring how orientation and transformation can change the way shapes appear.

Over the next three weeks, students will focus on the Indigenous text Yinti’s Desert Dog. Each day, students will explore one chapter, developing their comprehension skills through literal, inferential and evaluative questions. They will practise responding to questions both orally and in writing, using full sentences and relevant evidence from the text to explain and justify their thinking. Through these activities, students will build their ability to understand, interpret and critically evaluate the text while developing confidence in supporting their ideas with textual evidence.

On Wednesday 26th August, we will also celebrate Book Day with a fun dress-up day and a range of engaging reading activities. Students will have the opportunity to share their favourite characters and books, celebrate their love of reading and enjoy some fun literacy experiences together.

Year 5

In the next 3 weeks, Year 5 students will be engaging with the text, Waves by Donna Rawlins. They will think deeply about what they read by discussing both the literal and implied meanings, and how images and text features contribute to these meanings. Students will also focus on editing and improving their writing, by learning how sentence structure and descriptive language can make writing clearer, more engaging, and more effective.

In Mathematics, students will finish their Measurement unit and will move into Location, which entails looking at maps and coordinates, 3D shapes as well as perimeter and area.

Year 6

In English our Year 6 students are continuing their novel study of Laughter is the Best Ending by Maryam Master, with a strong focus on developing comprehension skills across written and audio‑visual texts. They are learning to identify key ideas, locate supporting evidence, and make both literal and inferential interpretations. Vocabulary development remains a priority, with students using context clues to understand unfamiliar words and strengthen overall reading confidence. In writing students are learning to develop a clear claim in their argumentative writing and support it with relevant evidence. They are practising how to explain their reasoning, select accurate facts and organise their ideas so their argument is logical, convincing and easy for the reader to follow.

In Mathematics, students are focusing on multiplication and division and applying these operations to multi‑step equations. They are investigating angle relationships, including angles on a straight line and opposite angles, and exploring geometric patterns and tessellations. Students will also conduct chance experiments, organise their results, and draw appropriate conclusions using probability reasoning.
