Supporting Student Transitions and Mental Health

Transitions are a natural part of every child's educational journey. Whether students are starting school, moving to a new year level, changing teachers, or preparing for secondary school, these changes can bring a mix of excitement, anticipation, and anxiety.

For primary school students, successful transitions are important for both learning and wellbeing. During periods of change, children may experience increased stress as they adapt to new routines, expectations, friendships, and environments. Some students may become more worried, withdrawn, or emotional, while others may show changes in behaviour or confidence.

Positive transitions can have a significant impact on mental health. When children feel supported, safe, and connected, they are more likely to develop resilience, confidence, and a sense of belonging. Strong relationships with teachers, peers, and family members help students navigate change and build the emotional skills needed to cope with challenges.

Parents and carers can support their child's mental wellbeing during times of transition by:

  • Maintaining consistent routines at home.
  • Encouraging open conversations about feelings and concerns.
  • Focusing on their child's strengths and achievements.
  • Helping them build independence and problem-solving skills.
  • Staying connected with school staff when additional support is needed.

At school, we support students through transition programs, wellbeing initiatives, and opportunities to strengthen friendships and social skills. By working together, families and schools can help children approach change with confidence and develop the resilience they need to thrive both academically and emotionally.

Every transition is an opportunity for growth. With the right support, children can build the skills and confidence needed to embrace new experiences and maintain positive mental health throughout their school years.
