The Past 3 Weeks in Prep 

The past 3 weeks have been busy, exciting and full of learning in Prep! We have been working hard across all areas of our learning and have enjoyed seeing students grow in confidence and independence. 

The Magpies Flew In! 

We had a very special visit from some Collingwood AFLW players! They shared their experiences with us, talked about their journey in football and told us what it is like to play at such a high level. Our students loved listening to their stories, asking questions and learning more about what it takes to be an AFL player. It was such an exciting experience and a wonderful opportunity for our Preps to meet some inspiring athletes!

Writing  

In Writing, we proudly published our recounts, allowing students to look back at their writing, make improvements and create a final published piece. 

We have now started learning about facts and opinions as we prepare to move into our next writing genre — persuasive writing. We have been putting this learning into practice by writing facts and opinions about our class bird. We have also started building a word wall of useful vocabulary and persuasive language that we can use in our upcoming writing. 

Phonics  

Our Phonics learning has focused on digraphs. Students have been learning that two letters can work together to make one sound and have been practising identifying digraphs within words. We have also been applying this knowledge when reading and spelling words. 

We have continued to build our confidence through dictated sentences, where students listen carefully, segment the words and use their phonics knowledge to write the sentence independently. It has been wonderful to see students becoming more confident in applying the sounds and spelling patterns they have learnt. 

Reading  

In Reading, we have been focusing on making text to self-connections and predictions. Students have been thinking about how stories remind them of their own experiences. 

We have also been practising making predictions before and during reading and using clues from the text and illustrations to explain our thinking. Our classroom discussions have been full of thoughtful ideas and interesting connections! 

Mathematics  

Our Maths learning has covered a range of exciting concepts, including capacity, sharing and place value. Students have been exploring which containers hold more or less and using hands-on activities to compare capacity.

We have also been learning about sharing and developing our understanding of equal groups. We used this knowledge to investigate odd and even numbers too! 

Inquiry 🌿 

In Inquiry, we have continued exploring the Wurundjeri seasonal calendar. We have been learning more about the seasons of Garrawang, Biderap and Luk, exploring the changes that occur in the environment and how people, plants and animals are connected to the seasons. 

We have been working very hard on our final Inquiry project and are incredibly excited to share it with you. Unfortunately, because our final work is a surprise, we can't show you any photos just yet! We promise it will be worth the wait! 

It has been a wonderful few weeks of learning, creativity and discovery, and we are so proud of the effort our Preps continue to put into their learning each day!
