Year 4 Inquiry

Year 4 Inquiry: I am an Investigator
The students of Year 4 have been investigating the question - How do rules, laws and social norms help communities function fairly and respectfully?
To answer this, we have found out the differences between rules, laws and social norms.
Our teachers asked us “What is a rule, law or social norm that would benefit you?” Our teacher’s suggestions of rules to benefit themselves were:
Jackie - Teachers can nap under their desks, but students cannot
Yasmin - Every time I have to repeat instructions, students must pay $5
Ben - Students that don’t “chin it” and continue writing must do 10 star jumps
Leanne - Rulers must be used to rule all lines, otherwise you owe Leanne a coffee.
Our suggestions for rules, laws or social norms that would benefit us were:
Next, we are going to be developing some fair, equitable and respectful rules and laws for the communities that we started planning during our “I am an Engineer” inquiry from last term. These communities are going to be turned into our own countries and we will investigate rules, laws, democratic decision-making, rights and responsibilities, identity, belonging and cultural diversity. We are going to create an Island Constitution and then present our country’s identity and culture.
