Principal's Report

Dear BEPS community,

It was another busy fortnight at Burwood East Primary School! From camps and lunchtime clubs to the celebration of learning at our Specialist Fair, there has been plenty happening across our school. These experiences remind us that learning extends well beyond the classroom, providing opportunities for students to develop confidence, build relationships, discover interests and challenge themselves.

There is plenty more to celebrate at BEPS, with students achieving wonderful results across sport and academic competitions!

Congratulations to Venya Year 6, who finished 3rd in the 200-metre event at the regional championships, achieving a personal best time in the process! This is a fantastic result and a wonderful example of perseverance, commitment and the rewards that come from striving to improve.

A huge congratulations to Ella Year 2, who has been recognised as a 2026 ICAS Medal Spelling Winner. ICAS medals are awarded to the highest-scoring student in each subject and year level in each state, making this a particularly outstanding achievement. This recognition celebrates exceptional academic performance and dedication to learning.

Congratulations to Malek Year 6, who achieved a Top 10% Highest Score in the 2026 APSMO Maths Olympiad Junior competition. This is an excellent result, reflecting strong mathematical thinking, problem-solving skills and the willingness to tackle challenging questions.

Parents may have noticed a change in our approach to using Compass to share more of the wonderful things happening across our school. We are committed to keeping families connected to the learning, activities and experiences that make BEPS such a vibrant community. An important part of this is showcasing the many clubs and activities available to students during recess and lunchtime. These opportunities allow students to develop new skills, discover interests, build friendships and connect with others beyond their classroom.

Whether it is chess, robotics, calligraphy, sport, music or another lunchtime passion, there is so much happening across BEPS! We want our families to see these opportunities in action and celebrate the staff and students who make them possible.

A huge thank you to our staff, students and families for making Thursday's Specialist Fair such a wonderful celebration of learning at BEPS! It was an opportunity to showcase the creativity, expertise and hard work taking place across our specialist programs. From robotics and our Cowcium reveal, Visual Arts and Mandarin projects, sporting activities and an outstanding range of Performing Arts performances, there was plenty to explore and celebrate.

Our combined choir, junior and senior choirs, ukulele students, individual music performers and B.E.P.S. School Band helped bring the afternoon to life. It was wonderful to see students sharing their learning and talents with pride, while families had the opportunity to visit learning spaces and experience the breadth of opportunities available at BEPS.

The fair was much more than an exhibition. It was a celebration of the learning, practice, and collaboration that happen every day across our school.

Year 3 Camp – Camp Weekaway!

Our Year 3 students enjoyed their adventure at Camp Weekaway, making memories and learning valuable lessons beyond the classroom.

Camps are about so much more than being away from home. They provide opportunities for students to build independence, strengthen friendships, take on challenges, work as a team and develop resilience.

A big thank you to the staff and parents who give their time and energy to make these experiences possible, and to our parents and carers for their support in preparing students for camp. These experiences create lasting memories and help our students grow in confidence.

Year 2 – Our Inaugural Day Camp!

Our Year 2 students have also been part of a special milestone, with the inaugural Year 2 Day Camp at the Mount Evelyn YMCA.

This exciting new experience gave students the opportunity to enjoy camp-style activities while developing teamwork, confidence and independence.

A big thank you to the staff who organised and supported this new initiative, and to our families for helping make the day possible. Establishing opportunities like this across different year levels help us build a strong culture of participation, connection and shared experiences.

We are excited to see this become another memorable part of the BEPS journey for our Year 2 students!

Monday 2 November – Curriculum Day: Parent Interviews

Our next Curriculum Day will provide time for parent interviews, with a hybrid approach available to support families in connecting with their child's teacher.

These conversations are an important opportunity to share progress, celebrate achievements, discuss learning goals and work together to support each child's next steps. Strong partnerships between home and school make a real difference, and we appreciate the time families invest in these conversations.

Please refer to Compass for arrangements and details relating to your interview.

Monday 23 November – Curriculum Day: Our Next School Cycle of Inquiry

We also have a planned Curriculum Day on Monday 23 November. Staff will come together to develop our next school cycle of inquiry, with a particular focus on the core knowledge developed through the novels read at BEPS.

This work is central to our commitment to purposeful, knowledge-rich teaching and learning. We will reflect on our current practice, strengthen our shared understanding of the curriculum and plan how we can continue to build students' knowledge, vocabulary, comprehension and deeper understanding across the school.

Our professional learning is always connected to one central question: How can we make learning even more effective for every BEPS student?

As always, thank you to our staff for the energy, care and commitment they bring to school life, and to our parents and carers for your continued support.

We are proud of the many ways our students are learning, contributing and growing, and we look forward to sharing even more through Compass.

Yours in partnership,

Darren
