From the  1/2 Classrooms

Our Grade 1 and 2 students have been busy exploring the wonders of Earth and Space Science!

As part of their rich assessment task, working in pairs, students created their own visual models of the solar system. They carefully considered the order of the planets, their relative sizes, colours and positions in relation to the Sun. It was wonderful to see students use their creativity while applying their growing understanding of the solar system.

To help us remember the order of the planets, we learnt a fun saying:

My - Mercury

Very - Venus

Energetic - Earth

Mother - Mars

Just - Jupiter

Served - Saturn

Up - Uranus

Noodles - Neptune

Students also chose a planet to become an expert on. Using the NASA Science- Space Place website, they researched interesting facts about their chosen planet and developed their skills in finding reliable information.

Students followed the Find - Think - Record process, which we had explored earlier in the term. They used this process to find important facts, think about what information was relevant and record useful notes. They then used their notes to write an information report about their chosen planet.

This rich assessment task allowed students to demonstrate not only their growing knowledge of Earth and Space Science, but also their skills in researching, note-taking, writing, communicating ideas and creating visual representations.

As a celebration of their learning, students participated in a mini science expo, where they shared their solar system models, planet research and information reports with other Foundation, Grade 1 and Grade 2 students. This provided a wonderful opportunity for students to practise communicating their learning, explain their ideas and celebrate their achievements with their peers before proudly sharing their learning with their families at our Whole School Expo.

We have been so impressed by the curiosity, creativity and enthusiasm the students have shown while exploring our science unit this term.

As we come to the end of Term 3, we would like to wish all our students and families a safe, happy and restful holiday break. We hope you enjoy some special time together, have the opportunity to recharge. We look forward to seeing everyone back in Term 4 for another busy and exciting term filled with more fun and learning.
