Important information from the Queensland Government impacting school students.
Does your child ride an e-bike or e-scooter?
From 31 August, only riders aged 16 or older who hold a valid driver licence (minimum learner) will be allowed to ride an e-bike or e-scooter unsupervised.
Children aged 12-15 years, and 16 to 17- year-olds who don’t hold a driver licence must be supervised by a parent, grandparent, legal guardian or carer.
- Parents can be fined $518.00 if a child under 16 is caught riding illegally.
- Some exemptions will apply, including for rail or mountain bike trails and private off-road cycling facilities.
- Medical exemptions will also be available for eligible riders aged 16 and over who are unable to hold a driver licence.
- These changes build on the new e-mobility laws introduced on 1 July, which include lower speed limits around pedestrians, increased fines for not wearing a helmet, doubling and other high-risk behaviours, and police powers to seize and destroy illegal devices.
