Lunchtime Talks – QUT, UQ and Police

Thank you to the representatives from Queensland University of Technology and University of Queensland who gave lunchtime talks at Marist last week. Students were given useful tips and tricks on scholarships and how to apply for them, and more general advice on university life and study.

 

Thank you to Sergeant Matthew Bach from Queensland Police, for taking time out of his day to share his personal experience and knowledge of careers in the police force, with our students. They certainly gained a lot from this fascinating discussion - thank you Sergeant Bach.

 

Year 11 Opportunity - Start QUT Program

High achieving Year 11 students wishing to study a university subject whilst in school, this program is for you: QUT - START QUT There are many subjects on offer, including a STEM intensive course during the Summer holidays, recommended as this does not clash with your school commitments, but there are also subjects on offer for Semester 1 and 2 next year. Please be aware that QUT requires you to meet at least a B average to apply, and applications close 31 October. Join this webinar for more information:

Year 11 Specialist Maths Opportunity - QUT Maths Summer School  

QUT is hosting their Mathematics Summer School, a 4-day summer school in November for Year 11 students studying Specialist maths. Why apply?

 

  • Go beyond the school curriculum and see how maths applies to real problems in STEM fields.
  • Build confidence before Year 12 by learning in a university environment.
  • Meet other students who share your interest in maths.
  • Experience QUT life through lectures, workshops and campus-based activities.

Year 12 - QTAC Applications Reminder:

  • Students wishing to apply for further study via QTAC are required to do the following two steps:
  1. Submit a QTAC Application
  2. Register for the ATAR Portal to have your ATAR calculated and released on 18 December.
  • To apply, you need:
    • non-school email (this is an important one to check from now on)
    • your LUI 
    • your USI
    • If you have done the UCAT exam, you will need your Application number
  • Keep an eye on early offer dates, if this applies to you, and any courses with fixed closing dates (E.g. Dentistry, Medicine, and a lot of Creative Courses requiring portfolios/ auditions)
  • Apply to QTAC before 30 September to get the Early Bird Fee of $75

  • TC Beirne School of Law Scholarship
    • This scholarship provides support of up to $5,000 to students hoping to pursue a law degree at UQ and who are experiencing financial hardship. Apply now as someone needs to win it - it could even be you!

 

University of Southern Queensland scholarships

  • Click here to find out what scholarships are available at UniSQ as well as those coming soon. You can apply for more than one, so be sure to read through all that are on offer and apply for all that you’re eligible for. Some of the scholarships on offer are:
  • Chancellor's Excellence Scholarship - Awarded to high achieving academic achievers (ATAR 98+), who have completed Year 12 in 2026 and are commencing their studies at UniSQ in a Bachelor's Degree program from the beginning of 2027
  • Vice-Chancellor's Excellence Scholarship - Awarded to high academic achievers (ATAR 90+), who have completed Year 12 in 2026 and are commencing their studies at UniSQ in a Bachelor's Degree program in Semester 1, 2027.
  • Regional Leaders Scholarship - support a student commencing their studies in a Bachelor’s Degree program who shows promising regional leadership. Applications close in January 2027.

Year 10 Work experience 

Work experience placements are now finalised for Year 10 students. A compulsory student induction is being held on Wednesday 2 September during Break 1. During the induction students will be provided with their Work Experience Agreement which is to be signed by all parties involved in the process – student, parent/guardian, provider and school.  This agreement must be completed before a student can attend placement. If you have any questions related to work experience, please contact Ms Stabik or Ms Peacock in the VET and Careers office.

Brisbane Northwest Trade Training Centre – Expression of Interest 2027

Certificate IV in Surveying and Spatial Information Services traineeship starting in February 2027.

 

Every road, bridge, stadium and new suburb starts with a surveyor. If you want Years 11 and 12 to count for something real, this traineeship puts you in the field with drones, laser scanners and 3D technology while you finish school. 

 

You will graduate with up to 8 QCE credits, direct university entry and a career that will set you up for life. To be eligible for this program, you must study General English and General Mathematics or Maths Methods for 4 semesters and exit with a ‘C’ or better.
