Mr Scott Reaper - Program Leader - Sport

This year, Met North have changed their processes regarding the communication of students selected in Met North regional and Queensland representative sporting teams.

As a result, the College is not always directly notified of student selections, which has made maintaining accurate records of representative achievements more challenging.

As we prepare for the 2026 Blue & Gold, we want to ensure that all students are appropriately recognised for their sporting achievements. To assist the College in cross-referencing our records and, importantly, ensuring no student is missed, we ask families to please complete the Microsoft Form below with details of their son’s 2026 Met North and Queensland representative sporting achievements. Please complete one form for each sport your son was selected for. The form will close Tuesday 15 September at 5:00pm. Thank you for your assistance in helping us accurately recognise and celebrate the achievements of our students.

Week 7 Sport

Wednesday kicked off sport last week for the blue and gold. Our Hockey team came away with a well-deserved 2–1 victory over St Patricks College, securing a place in the Grand Final against St Edmunds College. The boys will be playing in the Grand Final 4:00pm Wednesday 2 September at the State Hockey Centre in Morningside. We encourage the Marist community to get behind the team and wish the boys all the very best as they compete for the premiership.

Thursday night we had our first AIC track and field meet of the season. Some strong performances from Marist boys on the back of two full days at QSAC for the Met North championships highlight our strength in depth. Thank you to Mr Richard Graham, supported by the track and field staff, for a huge week last week. Well done to all boys who made the Met North team for the upcoming state championships.

AIC Round 5 saw us host to St Edmund’s College. The 1st XIII had a dominant 42-4 win with the Rugby League program having 14 wins and only 1 loss. The 1st IV also had a strong 5-3 win, with the program having 13 wins and only 1 loss. Our 1st V unfortunately had their first loss of the season 89-100. The boys are still in contention for a combined premiership. Overall, still a successful round with the Basketball program having 22 wins and 8 losses.

This weekend we away against Villanova College.

Integrity and Fair Play in School Sport

Sportsmanship, an essential aspect of competitive sports, encapsulates the spirit of fairness, respect, and integrity in athletic endeavours. It is the glue that holds the values of sports together, ensuring that competition remains a positive and enriching experience for athletes, spectators, and society at large. This article delves into the significance of sportsmanship, its core principles, and its impact on athletes and communities.

At its core, sportsmanship embodies the ideals of ethical behaviour, respect for opponents, adherence to rules, and graciousness in victory or defeat. It's more than just playing by the rules; it's about maintaining an attitude of respect, empathy, and humility throughout the sporting journey. True sportsmanship extends beyond the field of play, influencing personal growth, social interactions, and the larger sports culture.

Core Principles

  1. Respect for Opponents: Sportsmanship emphasizes the recognition of the efforts and skills of opponents. Treating opponents with respect fosters an environment of healthy competition and camaraderie.
  2. Fair Play: Adhering to the rules and regulations of the game is vital. Displaying honesty and integrity, even when it might lead to personal disadvantage, demonstrates the true essence of sportsmanship.
  3. Humility: Whether celebrating victory or dealing with defeat, humility is a central tenet of sportsmanship. Acknowledging the role of hard work, practice, and teamwork over individual achievement contributes to a well-rounded sports experience.
  4. Grace in victory and defeat: How athletes handle success and failure speaks volumes about their sportsmanship. Celebrating wins with modesty and accepting losses graciously highlights a deep understanding of the transient nature of sports.

Sportsmanship has a profound impact on athletes' personal development. It instils values that extend beyond the playing field, including empathy, resilience, and discipline. When athletes prioritize respect and fair play, they contribute to a positive sports culture that encourages inclusivity and sportsmanship among peers.

Moreover, embodying sportsmanship can enhance an athlete's mental resilience. The ability to stay composed under pressure, accept defeat with grace, and persevere through challenges is a testament to an athlete's character and sportsmanship.

Promoting sportsmanship requires a collective effort from athletes, coaches, parents, and staff. We all have a part to play in making sure the boys develop their capacity to be the best people that we can be.

Sportsmanship is the lifeblood of sports, infusing the playing field with integrity, respect, and fairness. Its principles enrich athletes' personal development and foster positive communities centred around shared values. By actively promoting and nurturing sportsmanship, we contribute to a sports culture that thrives on the ideals of mutual respect, healthy competition, and the pursuit of excellence.

Congratulations to Luca B, who finished third overall in the Men’s B Road Series following his final race on the weekend. It was an outstanding result, particularly after battling illness throughout the week, and one Luca should be very proud of.

Luca now turns his attention to a busy period of competition ahead, including the State Mountain Bike Championships, Noosa Triathlon and the National Road Racing Championships in Perth in January. We congratulate Luca on his achievements so far and wish him all the best for his upcoming events.

Hockey

Ms Kathryn Badini - Hockey Coordinator

Following a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Padua College, the team has secured its place in the Schoolboys Hockey Cup Grand Final.

The boys will once again face St Edmund's College on Wednesday at 4:00 pm at the State Hockey Centre. This will mark the fourth consecutive year that the two teams have met in the grand final. However, after a season of steady improvement and strong performances, it feels as though we are in our best position yet to take on this formidable opponent.

Given the number of injuries we’ve had this season, the boys have had to rally together, showing tremendous teamwork to ensure their place in the decider. Thankfully, we are expecting to have a full squad available for the grand final. Indeed, while reaching a grand final is always special, the opportunity to compete with the entire team together on the biggest stage is particularly exciting for the boys and a fitting reward for their efforts throughout the season.

The last time we faced St Edmund's, the match ended in a 5-5 draw, so spectators can expect another nail-biting contest. It’ll be great to have the Hive there to give us that extra push. Any students wishing to support the team and book a place on the supporters' bus need to email Ms Badini at badinik@marash.qld.edu.au.

We wish the boys all the very best as they prepare for what promises to be a fantastic grand final. Go Boys!

1st XIII Match Report – Indigenous Round

from Brad Winchester - 1st XIII Coach

The 1st XIII faced a determined St Edmund’s College side who have knocked off a number of the competition heavyweights this season. The match also marked our Indigenous Round, a special occasion for the Rugby League program and an important fixture on our calendar.

St Edmund’s came out firing and drew first blood to take an early 4–0 lead. The momentum began to shift around the 13-minute mark when Harry Grayson entered the game and provided plenty of energy and aggression through the middle. From there, the boys settled into the contest and began playing some quality football, taking a commanding 22–4 lead into half-time.

The second half continued in much the same fashion. The boys defended extremely well, and that defensive effort provided the platform to attack off the back of it. Marist continued to build pressure and finished the game strongly, running out 42–4 winners.

It was a great result on Indigenous Round and a fitting way to send off our Year 12 players in their final home game. The result also sets up an exciting final two rounds, with matches against Villanova and Padua, who are also equal first, as the boys continue their push for the premiership.

Final Score: Marist College Ashgrove 42 defeated St Edmund’s College 4Man of the Match: Harry Grayson

Basketball

Mr Jonte Brown - Basketball Coordinator

Round 5 was a fantastic weekend for Marist Basketball, with our teams producing one of our strongest collective performances of the season. Across 30 games played, Marist recorded 22 wins and just 8 losses!

There were some outstanding performances across the College, highlighted by dominant wins from the 6D (62–3), 7C (81–10), 8C (81–14), 10A (81–19) and 10B (78–16) teams. Our Opens also enjoyed a strong round, with the 2nd V, 3rd V and 4th V all securing victories. The 1st V competed in a high-scoring contest against St Edmund’s, eventually falling 100–89.

With five rounds now completed, a number of Marist teams remain firmly in the hunt for AIC premierships. With only a few rounds remaining, every result will be important as our teams look to finish the season strongly.

Congratulations to all our players and coaches on an excellent Round 5. With just two rounds remaining, Marist Basketball is well positioned to finish the season strongly, and we look forward to seeing our teams build on the great results and momentum they have created throughout the season.

AIC Round 6 – Thursday 3 and Saturday 5 September

The schedule for Thursday 3 and Saturday 5 September will be released early this week, with team lists to follow on Wednesday 2 September (Primary Teams) and Thursday 3 September (Secondary Teams). Please keep an eye out on Parent Orbit and emails for these to come out!

1st V Coach - Mr James Lymer - Round 5: Marist vs St Edmunds

Last Saturday marked our final home game of the AIC season. With every match carrying significant importance, we knew St Edmund’s would be looking to challenge our undefeated record, and they came out firing from the opening tip. Their strong first-half performance put us in a difficult position and left us with a mountain to climb.

I was encouraged by the group’s resilience and togetherness, responding strongly to win the second half 53-46. While the comeback ultimately fell short and we suffered our first loss of the season, 89-100, there were plenty of lessons to take from the performance.

The premiership race remains wide open as we sit alongside Lauries at the top of the ladder with a 4-1 record heading into the final two rounds. The disappointment of Saturday's result has only fuelled the group further, and the boys are eager to bounce back as we hit the road this weekend to take on Villanova.

The support from families, students, and the wider Marist community continues to play a huge role in our season so far, and we need it more than ever in these final weeks. Once again, it's a premiership game, and we'd love to see as many supporters as possible at Villa for a 12:15pm tip-off.

Tennis

Mr Andrew Ward - Director of Tennis

1st IV Tennis Recap from Will Lambley

This week saw a new line up as we faced St Edmunds. With both our top two players, Oscar and Indy, unable to play, two players got their debut for the Firsts. Ryan Mendes filled in at number 2, whilst Toby Campbell slotted in at number 4.

The first sets of doubles ended up split 1-1, with myself and Toby putting on an early display of dominance, while Tom and Ryan just fell short in their match. Next came the singles, where I continued my winning form, taking both sets 6-3 6-3, giving us a temporary lead. Despite a fiery start, Ryan slowly got broken down by his opponent, equalising the round at 2-2. Another win would come our way though, as Tom outclassed the St Edmunds number 3. Finally, Toby’s match would find itself split at a set each, meaning a 10 point tiebreak would decide the winner. After a dominant start, the hot conditions and lengthy match drained Toby’s energy, as it would slip away 6-10 in the tiebreak.

And now we found ourselves equal yet again at 3-3 as we entered the last two doubles matches. With us up two sets, all we had to do was win one match. Ryan and Tom got off to a quick start, dispatching their opponents 6-2, solidifying the round. And with the support of those behind us, Toby and I would go on to take our set 6-3, giving us the overall win 5-3.

Next week, we venture out to Villanova, where a win is crucial to finish the season in 3rd. Thank you to everyone who came to support, it really makes a difference, and we hope to see many of you again this week out at Villa.

Marist Track and Field | Uniform

A reminder that the DRESS CODE for all T&F training sessions is as per the 2026 Track and Field Handbook. MCA sports shirts / Marist T&F singlet, Marist sports shorts, and white or blue socks.

For competitive events including Internal Mini Meets, the DRESS CODE is as per the 2026 Track and Field Handbook. Marist T&F singlet, Marist sports shorts, and white or blue socks.

It is important we get this right now throughout the AIC Practice Meets, and we will be competing in the AIC Championship AS A TEAM wearing this uniform.

Marist Track and Field | AIC Practice Meet #1

As coaches, it was wonderful to see athletes who had competed for two days at Met North back up on the evening of Thursday 27th for AIC Practice Meet #1 to record a time or distance in their events. Those athletes who did not quite make Met North were also attending in good numbers again with some excellent times and distances showing Marist will remain competitive this year in the search for an 12th AIC title.

Not too late: It should be noted there are many AIC squads pushing to take our mantle so we encourage all athletes to run and record times.

Even if you have not attended training to date, to come down and record a time or distance as we always welcome new athletes wishing to try out for the AIC team. All Marist school students and prospective athletes are very welcome.

Some good performances: Some of the best performances from AIC Practice Meet #1 included –

  • A sub-11 second hand time for Isaac Ting
  • Ethan McKeever jumping 1.75m in the U14 high jump
  • 14 Years – At least 4 of the squad recording 12.4 second 100m times which is excellent at this time of season
  • Connor Campbell jumping 5.78m in the Opens long jump after a number of months injured
  • Darcy Webb throwing 47m+ in the U16 javelin

  • Magnus Millwater jumping 1.60m in the U12 high jump

  • Matt Pegg throwing over 12m in Opens shot

AIC Practice Meet #2 will be this Wednesday and we look forward to an even larger turnout with our Met North contingent returning.

Marist Track and Field | Met North Regional Track and Field Trials

Following the recent fantastic performances at the District event, 79 Marist students progressed through to the Met North Regional Track and Field Trials. Here, they continued their excellent early season form on the track, producing some further outstanding performances and proudly representing the College.

Following the two-day carnival at QSAC early last week, 35 Marist students gained selection for the Met North team to compete at the Queensland Regional School Sport State Championships. This is an excellent reward for their consistent performances, commitment to training and continued improvement throughout the early season. The Championships will be held from October 15–18, 2026.

Congratulations to our medal winners for their outstanding performances at the Met North Regional Track and Field Trials –

Term 4 Swimming

As we approach the final weeks of Term 3, preparations are well underway for the return of College swimming in Term 4. All students wishing to participate in the program must be registered via Parent Orbit.

This season, we will continue to build our program around the three key values established last year that now underpin everything we do: Courage, Unity and Performance.

Courage is having the confidence to challenge yourself, step outside your comfort zone, support your teammates and embrace the opportunity to compete against the very best.

Unity is the foundation of our identity. It means working hard for one another, celebrating success together, supporting each other through challenges and recognising that our greatest strength comes from operating as one team.

Performance is the result of commitment, discipline, accountability and the pursuit of excellence. It is reflected not only on race day, but also in the daily habits, decisions and standards that prepare us to perform when it matters most.

Our aim is to create an environment where every swimmer understands that their individual commitment contributes to something bigger. Consistent attendance, high training standards and supporting teammates will be important as we continue to build towards the 2026–27 College swimming season.

Swimming remains free during Term 4 and Term 1 for Marist students participating in the College training squads. Students are also welcome to join our Barracudas or Marlins squads at a discounted rate for additional training opportunities.

Training Attendance

Attendance will be recorded at every training session. Each year group will be required to meet a minimum attendance standard to be eligible for team selection.

This is designed to ensure fairness and accountability across the program while rewarding the students who consistently demonstrate their commitment to the team and their training.
