Book Week: Celebrating Imagination, Empathy and Community

There was something very special about seeing our primary students arrive at school for our Book Week Parade this past Monday. From superheroes and storybook characters to much-loved literary heroes, the creativity, enthusiasm and joy on display were wonderful to see.

What was equally special was the way our community supported the day. Our staff embraced the occasion, families encouraged and supported their children, and our students celebrated one another. For a moment, our school was filled with colour, imagination and, importantly, connection.

In the last two Middle School Assemblies, I have spoken with our students about empathy — the ability to look beyond ourselves, notice others and consider what someone else might be experiencing. Book Week provided a wonderful opportunity to see this in action.

As I have reminded our boys, empathy is not simply about being kind when something goes wrong. It is about the small choices we make every day: who we notice, who we include, who we encourage and how we make others feel.

Watching them proudly walk in their costumes, cheering for their friends and appreciating each other's creativity was a wonderful reminder that these seemingly small moments can have a significant impact on the culture of our College.

My most recent assembly addresses have challenged our students to understand that creating a safe and respectful community is everyone's responsibility. Events such as Book Week show us that this culture is built not only through what we teach, but through the way we celebrate, include and care for one another.

Thank you to our families for the support and creativity that made the day such a success, and to our staff for creating an environment where our students could simply be themselves, have fun and share in the joy of reading.
