SUSTAINABILITY

Reducing Waste with Nude Food Lunches
At Bittern PS, we are so lucky to be surrounded by beautiful grounds and even more grateful to call the Mornington Peninsula our home. The Mornington Peninsula is famous for it's stunning beaches, coastal cliffs, and peaceful bushlands filled with native wildlife and plants. Its natural world includes unique ecosystems like rockpools, wetlands, and ancient sand dunes that support many plant and animal species. It's no wonder that we care about our environment living in such a magical place.
Recently, our student sustainability warriors conducted a waste audit to see what kind of rubbish we are creating every day. What we discovered was surprising: a lot of our waste comes from single-use plastics like chip packets, cling wrap, and snack wrappers. These items are used once and then thrown away—many of them ending up in landfill and in our natural environment, where they stay forever. This was enough to know that we needed to take action!
So, what can we do? We’re excited to announce the launch of NUDE FOOD!
🍎 What is Nude Food?
Nude food means bringing lunches that are free from disposable packaging. That means no plastic wrap, zip-lock bags, or single-use snack packets. Instead, food is packed in reusable containers and drink bottles—better for your body and better for the planet!
🌿 Why is Nude Food Important?
- Less Waste: Fewer wrappers in our bins, in our school yard and the environment.
- Better for the Environment: Less plastic pollution harming animals and nature.
- Healthier Choices: Nude food often means less processed and more fresh food!
- We’re Being Change Makers: Small actions like this make a big difference in our community.
💡 What You Can Do
- Pack lunches in reusable containers.
- Use beeswax wraps or reusable sandwich pouches.
- Bring a refillable water bottle instead of juice boxes or poppers.
- Choose snacks that don’t come in single-use wrappers— buy in bulk and portion into containers.
🌟 Get Involved!
Each class will be tracking their progress with Nude Food Days.
Our goal? To reduce single-use waste and become true sustainability champions!
Together, we can make a difference—starting with our lunchboxes (we are already seeing a difference in our thinking, our lunches and in the reduction of rubbish!)
Let’s go nude food and reusable for a cleaner, greener school!
Thank you wonderful Bittern community for always working together to create change for our future generations.
