Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Excursion

On Friday the 9th of May, all of the Grade Six students went on an excursion to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, paid for by the Rotary Club.  The Orchestra performed Harry Potter theme music.

In the morning we boarded a bus, accompanied by two rotary people named Derryck and Kerri. We stopped at some other schools to pick up their Year Six students along the way. When we got to Melbourne and stopped, the students had a quick toilet break then we walked as a group across the bridge to the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at Hamer Hall. Once there we ate our snack on the grass and then entered the building. It was very crowded so we had to stick to each other like glue.

After we took our places the Orchestra began to play the Harry Potter theme song. It was stunning, just like magic. Everybody in the building was just mesmerised listening to the music. A video showed the News, reporting that in Melbourne, a music teacher was transformed into an ancient old wizard when he was doing a music lesson. After the video played, the conductor (a person who directs the orchestra) named Professor Lenny told us about the family's orchestra. There were the Woodwind family, the Brass family, String, and  percussion families.

Then suddenly the person who was transformed into a wizard appeared on the stage. He told us that he would need our help to return to his original form, and that if the families of instruments came together, the magic of the orchestra would be powerful enough to turn him back.   He picked up the book that the conductor was using and said that he was going to read this story, and it might help him transform back. The story was about a prince who wanted to play music, and 9 princesses who lived in a glass tower. The princesses who were capable of playing music in an orchestra had been  locked in the tower by an evil sorcerer,  and soon the land was consumed by misery. The prince had asked the phoenix who lived in the mountains to release the princesses. And when the prince rescued  the princesses they said that they would grant his wish. His wish was to play music. While the wizard was reading the story, the orchestra was playing music to describe every word he said. When he finished the story the wizard was slowly turning back into his original form  .

It was working!  He finally turned back into a normal man. Everybody cheered!

After the performance we all walked back over the bridge to the bus. When we arrived back at school we were all exhausted but the school captains (Kayden and Rose) still managed to thank Derrick and Kerri. It was an amazing day, and we hope we will get more fun  opportunities soon.
