🌱 Growing Change in Bittern: Students Build Self-Watering Wicking Planters for the Community 🌱
At Bittern, learning is going beyond the classroom and into the garden! As part of the Hands-on Learning program, we have joined with other schools on an exciting initiative: the Chelsea Community Project. Students have been working hard to build self-watering wicking planters — an environmentally-friendly solution that supports sustainable gardening.
These smart planters use a simple wicking system to keep plants hydrated without daily watering. It’s a clever mix of science, sustainability, and hands-on construction that’s teaching students valuable life skills — from teamwork and planning to problem-solving and environmental awareness.
The finished planters will be donated to the Chelsea Community Project to encourage homegrown produce and healthier lifestyles. It’s all part of a broader effort to connect students with real-world learning that makes a difference.
At Bittern, students aren’t just planting seeds — they’re planting the future.
Stay tuned for more updates as the project continues to flourish!

This term we are running 2 drumming groups with both our Year 1 and Year 4/5 students.
These drumming groups are led by Natalie Everitt (Anglicare Social Worker) and Maria and Jordan from Youth Services (Shed 11 ) in Hastings.
Rhythm2Recovery delivers therapeutic programs and professional development, that utilise fun and engaging rhythmic musical activities to support social and emotional development. It is also a fun way to work together and play some cool drums!
