From the Principal

Dear Parents, Guardians, Students, Staff and Friends of Mazenod College,

“Life shines brightly not because we are rich, beautiful or powerful.  Instead, it shines when we discover within ourselves the truth that we are called by God, have a vocation, have a mission, that our lives serve something greater than ourselves” (Pope Leo XIV Pontifex).

It might seem repetitive that each time we come to the first newsletter in November, I recollect speaking of the incredible events at this time of the year. It is quite natural though, because for me, these are events that are so well regarded for good reason within our College community over many, many years.

I speak particularly of the Creative Arts Exhibition, our College Sports Awards Night and our Grandparents Mass and the Old Boys Memorial Mass are always very special celebrations in differing ways.

The annual Creative Arts Exhibition once again showcased the extraordinary talent and imagination of our students across Visual Art and Media. The exhibition celebrated the creativity, perseverance, and passion that thrive within our College community. Each of the works on display were amazing and reflected, not only artistic skill but also, the courage to express ideas and perspectives with authenticity. We thank our dedicated Visual Arts staff of Ms Jazmin McKechnie, Ms Cathy Giannopoulos and Miss Lauren Gissing, for inspiring our young artists, and our families for their ongoing encouragement and support of the creative spirit at Mazenod.

As always, the College Sports Awards Evening was another fitting celebration of the energy, commitment, and teamwork that define Mazenod sport. The evening recognised students who have excelled through determination, sportsmanship, and pride in representing the College. It was also a moment to acknowledge the coaches, staff, and families who contribute so much behind the scenes. Thanks especially to Mr Tim Grabski, Mr Chris Mason, the HPE staff and all College staff who contributed to this special evening.

Congratulations to all award recipients and to every student who participated throughout the year - together, you embody the Mazenod spirit of striving for excellence through effort and unity. I would like to extend special thanks to our 2025 College Captain of Sports, Riley G for his commitment and service this year, and also for his inspiring, thoughtful and others-centred speech on the night.

Our Grandparents Mass is a heartwarming opportunity to give thanks for the special role our Grandparents play in the lives of our young men and in the heart of our school community. Their faith, encouragement, and love does in fact enrich us all and our Mass is a reminder that our Grandparents are cherished and their presence continues to shape and strengthen the spirit of our community. I extend my thanks to all Grandparents who shared this celebration with us.

Traditionally at the start of November, we faithfully acknowledge All Saints’ Day today and All Souls’ Day, which occurred over the weekend, remembering the Saints and those we have loved and lost from this earthly life. We are all touched by death and loss and the marking of these times with solemn occasions such as All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day brings some consolation and a reminder of our eternal life in heaven.

“How consoling it is to know that death does not destroy the bonds of affection formed in Christ, but rather perfects them in eternity”. (St Eugene De Mazenod)

God bless.
