A Spotlight on Learning in the MLC on Springvale Campus
As we begin Semester 2, it is hard to believe how quickly the year has gone! The MLC teachers were very proud of the way students confidently shared their learning and achievements with their families during the Three-Way-Interviews at the end of Term 2. It was wonderful to celebrate how much they have grown since the beginning of the year.
During Projects, students have been learning about NAIDOC Week, this year’s theme ’50 Years of Deadly’, and the cultures, histories and achievements of First Nations People. Each class has also been creating a Deadly Door display inspired by a book written or illustrated by an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander author or illustrator. Such creativity, collaboration and teamwork were demonstrated by everyone!
Building resilience has been a focus these few weeks. During Social and Emotional Learning, students have practised strategies to solve small problems independently and bounce back when things do not go as planned. They discussed what makes a good friend and a good classmate, and how to show kindness, respect and empathy towards each other in the learning spaces and in the yard.
Across Reading lessons, students have been identifying the main idea in both narrative and informative texts. They have strengthened their understanding by explaining what a text is mostly about using key words, their own words and evidence from the text to support their thinking.
Creativity has flourished in Writing as students crafted engaging narratives. Students have been developing their ability to use descriptive words and phrases to create interesting characters and settings. They experimented with starting their introduction in different ways, such as with a dialogue or a question, to capture their reader’s attention from the beginning of their stories.
Developing students' additive thinking skills has been the focus in Mathematics. They have been learning efficient strategies to solve addition problems, recognising the connection between addition and subtraction, and using known addition facts to help them work out solutions for subtraction problems. It has been fantastic to watch their mathematical understanding continue to grow.
There is so much to look forward to over the coming weeks. Our upcoming excursion to the Immigration Museum and the Swimming Program will provide exciting opportunities for students to learn, challenge themselves and create lasting memories. We cannot wait to share more of their learning and experiences with you as the semester continues.
